CD-ROM and DVD not working

Featured Replies

Both my CD-ROM and DVD drive stopped working suddenly. I've tried everything I can think of but can't get them working.

They still have power but they wont read any discs in windows and their drive icons aren't shown in "My Computer". In the device manager they both have an exclamation point next to them to indicate there is a problem but Windows troubleshooting doesn't help me.

First I tried connecting their IDE cable to a different IDE channel on the motherboard. Then I tried replacing the IDE cable altogether. I've also tried going into the BIOS to see that the drives are being recognized there...they are. I thought maybe the problem was in Windows so I tried inserting a boot disc into both drives and re-booting the computer. The boot disc ran fine, so it seems the physical drives are not causing the problem. In Windows XP, I deleted the drives from device manager and then let Windows autodetect them but it always comes back saying there was a problem and they could not be installed correctly. I tried booting into safe-mode but the drives don't work in safe-mode either.

This is getting pretty annoying. Does anyone have any other ideas on what might be the problem or what additional steps I should take to find the problem?

Here's a picture of the device manager in case that helps. I'm also not sure what that SCSI device is. I can't remember if that's always been there or if it only started appearing after the drives stopped working.

Are you using any virtual drive software, that may be where the Scsi drive comes from, and it may be interfering with the other drives.

Wow, thanks! Following the directions in that link fixed everything! I never expected to get a solution so quickly.

Thanks again!
