Port problems, any one experienced with ports?

Ok, so i've installed and am trying to update a new mmo. Problem is, i keep getting an error when trying to download the updates saying that there is a network problem, and that i should try back later. Now after phoning my service provider, and asking about the problem, they told me that it was a problem with my router, and that it had to do with ip's or ports or something. So i checked on the site for the game, and sure enough, it said i should open more ports.

Now after 3 hours of figuring out how my router works (With dads help) we managed to get to the firewall menu of the router control, and set it to allow a range of ports that was indicated on the site.

I'm waiting for the inital check of all the files that need to be downloaded before i can actually download/check if my actions worked.

Anyone think i may of did something wrong?

BTW It's a D-Link wired router, DI-604. The game is FFXI.
