I just got half-life 2, and I get to the part where i try to install the steam engine, I put in my username and password, and i get an error message about it not being able to connect.

It's possible that your router's firewall is blocking Steam from connecting. You need to configure you're firewall so that it allows it. If you need help doing that, I'll definitely try to help you.
