A catharsis from what?

Do you ever find yourself looking for ways to catharsize yourself i.e. to feel something just because you want to get your mind off of things or just because you want to feel? How do you do it?

The real question is why do you do it? Why do we need a catharsis from living? Is life really that mediocre that we try and purposefully make ourselves feel something that we don't or can't?

Ok, now for why I'm doing this. Perhaps I'm just thinking too much or perhaps I'm mixed up in the head. Lately I've been purposefully wanting to make myself feel something; anything. I just watched the movie 'The Shawshank Redemption' (awesome movie) and kept thinking to myself I hope I'm crying by the end of this. The thing is there's nothing I'm hiding from; my life is basically great.

Does anyone else feel this need for catharsis like I do or is it just that I'm a bit messed up, in your opinion. No need to be kind. :wink:

Well on a daily basis, everyone has emotions they must constantly hide, atleast I do. In a class by example, I was in 12th btw, the teachers would just kick us out of class if we talked without permission. So constantly, in class, you're there fighting the urge to talk, to make a comment, to just express yourself, but you can't because the stupid society won't allow it. Then I went to work on weekends and there was always someone making a remark such as "You should look happier" or picking fights over stupid things. You know, people who enjoy annoying employees. Then, I must fight the urge to fight back to not lose my job. In a day, I could go through all sorts of emotions, but it just seems that whatever we do, we cannot express them. That's the thing that frustrates me the most, can't express my mind, tell my opinion, or do anything spontaneous without the whole world glaring at me.

And see now, I'm on a forum talking my mind because in the real world, no one will allow it.

I once told my gf that one of my strongest wishes was to one day, if I ever had the time, to find some secluded, isolated place. A forest or mountain or field, and just SCREAM all the frustration and feelings I've ever held in out of me.

..

She expressed a wish to do so too.

So I guess what I'm saying is - yes I do. [;

You wouldn't need to force an emotion if you're not hiding from it. Sounds like a bit of a contradiction to me, there are surely some things that you are unwilling to let go of.

Yea man, society never lets us express ourselves!

To the OP: Yea, I don't know why though. It's just human nature for some reason I guess

I'm a pretty emotion-less person. I don't know why but things don't tend to bother me most of the time. Occasionally someone will make me really mad or really upset but its not often.

So no, I dont really have these kinds of tendencies. Usually I'm pretty happy.
