My husband gets a error message saying something like this; "Can't initialize TCP/IP...." ( I will let him take a screenie of the message and translate it from norwegian to english if you need to know more) at startup on his laptop.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Is this connected to him downloading and installing Panda antivirus/firewall?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Noone of us know squat about computers (well I know some at least) so I would be so happy if any of you guys know what this is and how to get rid of it? :oops:

I had several issues with panda firewall but i wont get into biased comments :x

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Firt try to disable firewall protection on the panda, reboot and see if the message persists.

Edit: Dont think I dare advice him to use that TCP/IP repair, since he is using/connecting his laptop via a network on his workplace. What you think? :?

edit: did you disabled the firewall for good? i am, in the boot it boots with the firewall disabled right?

In simple terms, a firewall works by splitting the TCP/IP network layer, and inserting themselves into it. If the firewall software isn't very good, it will kill the network stack and you will end up with exactly what you have described.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I also have heard of, and experienced problems with people running the Panda firewall.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I too have been working in the computer industry, and have been a tech in our university now for over 19 years.

 

 

 

My advice is:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Uninstall the Panda Firewall.

 

 

 

If you're running XP then enable the Windows firewall.

 

 

 

If uninstalling Panda still gives you the same problem, then you will need to repair the IP stack that was broken by Panda, here's a little program that does exactly that: WinsockFix.zip.

 

 

 

That's what I have been using for years, and it does a good job too!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If your hubby wants a good free firewall other than the windows one, I would suggest he use ZoneAlarm.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Oh and steer well clear of Norton's internet suite too.

Clare my husband wanted to try your suggestion first, so he uninstalled panda and installed the zip.file. At reboot the error message was gone. he have ZoneAlarm running now and it works perfectly.
