August 1, 200718 yr Yesterday on a forum I was using a guide on port forwarding for a game. I made a thread asking for help, but didn't get any answers. After that I tried changing the settings to enable UPnP (or something like that). Suddenly the router's password screen came up again, and the same password I had used minutes earlier didn't work anymore. I either messed my own login up toying around (although I didn't change much), or someone on the forum got enough of my information to somehow log into my router. If the latter is the case, I definitely want to do something. Right now I don't mind not being able to log into my router anymore because I don't really need to, but if someone has access to my computer, I definitely need to do something. I'm thinking someone might possibly have access, because under network connections there's an "internet gateway" that suddenly came up. It's possible I somehow did that trying to change router settings but since a gateway allows for shared computer internet access I'm thinking it might be bad. I called my router's company a few minutes ago only to find out my router was out of warrantee so if I did restart my router I'd either be on my own configuring it or have to pay $30 on a different call area. I'd like some advice. Is there any way to check if there is someone who has access to my router? Is there a way to reset my router password without resetting my router? I'd like to have the peace of mind that my internet security hasn't been compromised without having to spend hours fixing my internet. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
August 1, 200718 yr In all likelihood you'll have to restart the router (usually with a sunken button on the back) to reset the password. If there's another way it should be apparent in the router's manual (which can often be downloaded if you don't have it). If it comes to rebooting your router most ISPs provide connection settings on their website. The Internet Gateway icon in Network Connections appears when Windows detects that your gateway supports UPnP, so it probably appeared when you enabled that.
August 2, 200718 yr Author Thanks, I ended up just resetting my router. I tried getting the router to work (I'm on a different connection right now) but couldn't, so I'm just going to buy a wireless router so I can call the company for help configuring it.
August 2, 200718 yr If you're going to be buying a new router, get a Netgear one, experience has taught me they have excellent routers, much better than a lot of others. Steer away from D-link as I have had bad experiences with their routers. My present wireless router is a Netgear DG834G, and It's totally superb. And configuring the Port forwarding is a breeze.
