For ahrims, there are 2 side-steps, the one you mentioned, and another. but you must set up perfectly. When you search the coffin thingy, you must be on the north-east side of the coffin, facing east. You then have a 50/50 chance of him appearing south east of you, or north west. If he appears south east, you have a side-step. To be honest, my ranging isn't that great, so I use this side step to attack with a dds, get under cover, repeat. His mage attacks are so slow, so he nearly never gets to attack me :D

This sidestep will NOT work the other way around, and if you lure him into this side-step, it wont work.
