First Terragen Attempt

Not bad at all for a first try, I promise I'll give you some proper C&C later... but I just told Nad to get his lazy cabbage wagon over here to take care of it while I'm doing my homework, so just wait for him :P

In the mean time, the surface map needs work, the water wave size/length should be lowered for a calmer feeling, the terrain isn't well.. bad.. but not great either, and the atmo isn't bad for a first try, I'm glad to see you didn't just leave it at the default settings.

Ok... i'll just do stuff in paragraphs isuing everything.

The atmosphere, it isn't bad. i like the effect of the lower clouds thats down there bellow the sun (its something not many do) and it would be cool if you went along that road a bit more. The sun also is very powerful, it gives a kind of "intense" feeling to the piece, like in the dead of summer, but the rest of the atmosphere looks very calm in a way, if you get what i'm getting at here.

The Terrain, well it isn't bad. I like the fact that you don't have any extreme mountains out of here. Its comonly a mistake for beginers to just crank up settings and come up with some realy realy pointy mountains and it brings a bad result. For yours, i can see that it does seem decently realistic as far as placement, ect. ect. goes. You even do something not many do and have depth somewhat. You can see the mountain in the back, which i realy think is a good thing to do, because its quite bad when you just "cut off" all of the sudden.

The surface map is what you need to work on. from what i see you have just a tad of snow on there, perhaps melting snow, and just grey land. Now like i said before, the way the atmosphere looks it seems like even snow of that ammount would not stay there. Go to terragens website and look at their surface map tutorial thing. It explains alot about parrent/child layers, but now i'll just breifly explain them.

Basicly parrent/child layers work like this: You have the parrent layer, or the main thing, and than you give child layers to it. Think of it as this "a child is always where the parrent is" This is true about the layers as well. The child layer always apears where the parrent layer is. to put into visual terms, the first layer you are given with is a parrent layer. from there, you give it a child layer. That child layer can then become a parrent layer to several layers, that would be where it only is. You can than do another child layer from the main parrent layer, and those would only be where you specify. usualy people do a child/parrent layer for each type of thing, like Grass/dirt/snow/rock ect. If your confused just look at their site for more info.

The water also probaly needs to be smoothed out some. Right now i don't think you would be seeing waves that choppy near a coastline like that , turning the wave level down would help. Also, switch your water to a "tropical" type, it probaly would help the overall mood of the piece.

Overall, you did decently for a first try, however you have plenty of room to work with, especialy the surface map which you didn't do as well on, but you have a quite decent atmosphere for a first try :D
