I need lots of limpwurt roots, and are wondering if cockatrice are the best option, as I have unlocked the fairy rings. Also what is a cockatrice's max hit? Thanks

cockatrices are very good for limpwurt roots and they barely hit you so :)

You can 1 hit cockatrices often if you have 70+ strength. And they are very good for limpwurt roots, yes. Hill giants aren't bad, but cockatrices are better.

cockatrice are probably the best droppers in the gamer for limps, although hobgoblins are a close second. i personally go to hobgoblins for the chance of a challenge scroll.
