Baron8000's new PC - pick me a motherboard

Featured Replies

Hey guys, you know what happened to the forum and I'm unable to recover my old topic so it looks like I have to do this all over again...(although of course, if anyone can work the damned google cache thing better than me and can recover my old topic I will be forever grateful)

Basically - New desktop being built by me, only need to build the tower as I have all the monitor/speakers etc with a budget of £600. As far as I remember JoedaStudd made me a build that looked great using mostly parts from http://www.scan.co.uk and I can remember a bit of it (and joe has helped me out) but I'm worried about compatibility of parts if I just pick the rest myself.

Parts I can remember (I think - feel free to suggest any improvements):

Graphics card - Nvidia 9600 - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=772608

Case - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=617633 (question on this - the power supply for this is 500W - is that good enough? General advice appreciated here)

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66 - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=736333 (question on this one - will the heatsink/cooling fan etc come with this or will I need to buy it separately?)

HD - Western Digital 500GB - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=530765 (could someone check the compatibility here? Thanks)

Now - things I can't remember:

Motherboard - NO clue here whatsoever, this is my biggest worry - I really don't want to buy a load of parts and find out the things won't work or even fit into each other. Any suggestions appreciated and feel free to change around the earlier parts if needed

Ram - again, can't remember, 4gb would be nice but I have no idea which makes are good (or even if it matters); whilst I realise this is probably a simple part to buy and most will work I'd like to make sure I get something of fairly good quality and don't make any fundamental mistakes.

OS - Vista of a 64bit variety I believe was the suggestion - Home premium I think? (I intend to get vista for gaming purposes so I just need to know what version is best for me - I realise I'm not providing much info here, as I don;t know what to provide, so feel free to ask any questions)

I think that's all the parts I need, of course if I've missed anything obvious then please tell me :)

Thanks everyone in advance for all the help - I realise I may be being paranoid, pedantic or just a simpleton in places here but £600 is a lot for me as a student and I really don't want to waste any money or end up with a lame duck of a gaming rig (Age of Conan being the aiming point as some may remember)

What exactly was the name of your post? I've found I'm pretty good at recovering posts. Lionheart still owes me for recovering his siggy.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

I think it was called "baron8000's new computer" - if you could manage that that would be great :)

Looked through all search results for '"Baron8000" site:tip.it', '"Baron8000's new computer" site:tip.it", '"New computer" site:tip.it', and all variations I could think of. Nothing. I'm guessing that the google bots found that the page didn't exist anymore, so it's cache was cleared, if they do that. Or a cache somehow wasn't made in the first place.

According to Antec's website, that case comes with a Earthwatts psu. From all account they are fairly reliable power supplies.

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66 - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=736333 (question on this one - will the heatsink/cooling fan etc come with this or will I need to buy it separately?)

All cpus come with stock coolers. Unless you plan to overclock, just use that one.

You want a Socket 775 motherboard. Basically a motherboard doesn't effect performance too much (unless overclocking). Other than that, it is mainly certain features that make more expensive motherboards, such as firewire, more usb ports, multiple pcie slots, etc. If you don't need anything fancy like that, I'd recommend an ep35-ds3, although the site your ordering from doesn't seem to stock them. Overclockers Uk stocks them, if you can order: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... =MB-133-GI. Dunno why it;s listed as a DDr3 Motherboard, cause it's not compatible with DDR3 ram, so just ignor ethat part.

Ram - again, can't remember, 4gb would be nice but I have no idea which makes are good (or even if it matters); whilst I realise this is probably a simple part to buy and most will work I'd like to make sure I get something of fairly good quality and don't make any fundamental mistakes.

Again, unless your overclocking, high speed ram isn't really needed. http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=632574 is all that looks good from your site (Corsair are reliable), but if you can order from another site then you could probably find cheaper ram that would suit you. Just try and look for some 800mhz ram, since it's so cheap nowadays.

Yes, if you are going to have 4gb of ram, then you would need 64-bit version so that the comp can utilize all of it, and unless you want some fancy features that Ulimate offers, I'd go with Home Premium.

Other than that, looks all good. Building a pc might look a little daunting at first, but it's really quite easy (motherboard comes with instructions too) and it's a real good feeling when you boot it up and it actually works :D
