If I use the system restoration CD, will this overight the MBR?

Possibly. Otherwise I believe you can simply boot with a bootdisk and type "Fdisk /mbr". Or something similar, since I've only done it once my memory isn't at its best :P

depends on if it's the hp-kind of restore cd, or the winxp install cd itself
