I assume you're playing HD. Taking off "scenery shadows" should do the trick.

Even on low detail safe mode the smoke is still there. Quite annoying.

It went away for me...I wonder what I hit then. Perhaps I put "visible levels" on current? Pretty sure it was the thing I said before though...odd.
