unless you can put it in lamens terms.

for the landscape itself ( and maybe the water too ) people generally use terragen or bryce, which are 3d programs which can make landscapes basically.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Photoshop or paintshop are programs which (in this case) are usually used to touch up or make the picture that you made with bryce or terragen look better. By this i mean adding effects, font, adjusting colors etc.
