Buying a new dvd drive/burner - what to look for?

Featured Replies

Hi,

My dvd burner broke so now I got to buy a new one (can't play any cd's or games with a dvd/cd now). What should I look for to buy a good one? I don't want to play blu-ray or anything. I noticed with my old one that if I played Vice City with a CD it would be slower than when I played it with a crack. Does this have to do with the quality/speed of my dvd drive?

I want one that can burn and play both cd's and dvd's. I often see speeds on 'em like 22x, but I have no clue what it means or what speed is good.

Hope you guys can help here.

SATA or IDE connector?

22x is the speed of which it can write a dvd-disc for example.

And get one with lightscribe if you can, always nice to have.

Don't know where you live so i'm just gonna throw this link at you:

IDE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827136144

I live in Holland but I already have a good place that sells tons of different dvd players. I just don't really trust the advice of a salesman. I have no clue if it's IDE or SATA. How do I find out? And do I need to take that into consideration? And what is lightscribe? Is that the thing that burns a picture onto your disk? That would be cool but I don't want to pay a lot more for it.

The speeds on the link that you sent me are the same as most burners I see. Is that an acceptable speed?

PS: I got a free cd-rom drive (not burner) from a friend. It was made in 2002 but the speed on it is also 48x. Has that not changed over time?

Open up your case and see if it's a IDE or SATA connector, easiest way to do it (be grounded just for safety precautions). I'm hoping you know how to replace it?

And yes, that's lightscribe, doesn't cost anything extra usually.

And yes, the speeds are ok.

Alright then. I don't know how to replace it but I'm sure I can find some kinda tutorial on the internet. So the problem I used to have while playing Vice City wasn't because of my cd driver speed?

A bit old but works: http://www.nordichardware.com/Guides/?p ... ivelse=432

I have no idea about the Vice City issue.
