Boss hunting is one example of when it is better. I also like to take a Tortoise when I kill dragons, as it gives a few extra spaces to hold bones/hides and such. Another example is at Gorak's when I need to hold lots of Gems. Other than that, the Terrorbird is generally all-around useful.
