Jem's Story

"Ready?" Simon asked me. I nodded, and looked through the machine we had stolen. The faint, pulsating glow beckoned me, and I took a step forward, my dagger resting in my hand, as it always did.

I turned to Simon. "If I don't come back, kill him and destroy the machine." I turned back, and jumped into the purple light.

--

I landed in a jungle. All around me were trees, and noises of animals taunted me endlessly. My grip tightened, but my dagger wasn't there. I tensed, expecting a strike of some kind. An owl hooted behind me, and I bolted. I crashed through trees, making such noise that I felt I would surely be captured. Nothing attacked me, however, and I eventually broke through the trees. I looked behind me, and saw that I had been in but a grove, not a jungle at all.

I shuddered, and looked at the sky. The sun was cresting, almost to the horizon, and I realized I would need to find some fire if it was going to get any colder. I searched my pockets to see if I had any matches, but, alas, nothing. I did, however, find 2 maps. One was a map of the land, and the other had words on it. I looked at it for a minute, and decided I was going to go to the city looking place; he would probably be there, or at least be headed there. I searched around for some minutes more for anything to light a fire with, but couldn't find anything, so I settled for laying a bunch of leaves on top of my head and going to sleep under them.

Light streamed in through the leaves over my body as I awoke. A fine dew covered me, and I shivered from the frost. My stomach grumbled, but I ignored it, instead taking out my map again, and looking at it. I noticed in the light that there were more than one city type places One was in the far right of the map, and then another two were on the far left. It also looked like a lot of water was on the edge, so I assumed that was the sea, with a river running to it. The one I had decided to go to was the east one last night, but I didn't know now. So I flipped a stick, serving as my replacement for a coin. After a few tries, I got it to stick in the ground, with the side signifying that I should go to the right one up.

Now I just needed to figure out which way was right. I looked around, but I wasn't near a path, and no water was near me. The grove also didn't give me any sort of hint, as a lot of places had trees and things according to the map. I sat back down, and sighed; no where to go, no one to help, nothing. After I had spent five minutes, I just picked a direction, and started walking; away from the grove I went.

Ooc: This is where Jem is and where he's headed:
