Well I'm not entirely sure of this but whenever it does his so-called range attack (throws the big rock) I get a splash like you would get from a failed magic attack.

I was just wondering whether you guys are wrong about it's melee+range attacks, they could be melee+mage... ^^

To answer your question - if you ask your slayer master (s)he'll tell you. I suppose the splash you saw was the rock exploding on impact.
