Simple question, is there anyway to know if a clue is an elite or not?

Not as far as I know. Of course, if you've never encountered that clue/it has an orb thing to the bottom right/ it's got a compass, you can assume it's Elite.

That's right.

 

So far on my elite clues i have only gotten compass clues, scan clues, puzzle boxes and knot puzzles.
