You don't need the soft leather for the quest, I just did it and I didn't use it at all.

Hi there,

I believe the leather is used when fixing the bellows?

Is is possible that you found some leather in one of the crates of the central room while you were doing the quest?

Just did the quest on a newbie account; leather is indeed used, so I'll assume you found it in one of the crates.
