The Observer
Custom Ranks are a lot more common now in IPB than in phpBB3 (referring the the moderators and such). Maybe we can fix this by giving the reward of a custom usergroup rather than the custom rank? It would remain the same colour and have the same permissions as the regular member group but would just be a different name. Rate/hate. If you don't know what I mean by this, look to the left of my post where it says "Group: Clan Official", the group itself would be a different name, depending on what the person chooses. jimmy_jim
It's not like custom ranks are given out often unless the person is a staff member. I think the way it currently works is fine, every so often a little competition is made and someone get the chance to win a custom rank, it's not like it's a lot of people. I doubt it's more than 3 or 4 per year. It also gives people more choice in their rank rather then getting something which they may not want. RIP Michaelangelopolousu can control my tip it account, but youll never control how fine i am!This is by FAR my favorite song: I love N_odie and would never edit his posts! I love Rainy_Day too <3 And also Cowman_133. <33 Oh, and Laikrob is a going to hunt me down and kill me like a pest kangaroo if I reveal how awesome she is. I owe tripsis skittles. That is true, but custom usergroups are just as flexible as custom member titles and it creates more of an "earned" status considering staff members can pretty much change member titles at will.
tripsis
Honestly I think this is over complicating things. We change custom ranks in someone's profile. Groups are stored and listed within the ACP and suddenly having a bunch more would really REALLY clutter up the admins' list. It may seem like a minor annoyance but we already have a ton of groups and it can be annoying scrolling through them all to find the one you want. Also, having regular members in different groups could potentially complicate things if we ever need to change members' permissions. Then rather than changing one group, we may have to change tens (depending upon the change that we're doing). It is true that we do have a bit more custom ranks now, but only within the staff. The rarity of custom ranks within the pool of regular members has not changed. Staff members have always been able to have custom ranks of their choosing since they do not have an opportunity to earn one via the rank contest (they are forbidden from entering since they judge the contests). Therefore, giving staff members custom ranks is both a token of thanks for judging the contests and simply just a small reward because as long as they're on staff, they do not even have a chance of winning one the "normal" way (again, because they're not allowed to even enter the contest). Honestly either way it's a custom name. Does changing the way in which it shows up really make it THAT much more special? - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

The reason staff do get the option to request to have their member titles changed is because they can't take part in the contests where the prizes are member titles because it's staff that does the voting for the winner. So, pretty much the only people who aren't staff which have custom member titles are ex-staff or contest winners. I don't really understand how they wouldn't feel that they've earned it? Ah, I suppose I did overlook the problems it would cause within administration and with your second point. Just a quick note: Suggested it because I thought it was a good idea from my clan boards. No offense meant to any on staff. :P
