WindStriker
I made this recently and I know it's not great (not even 1/4 finished) but I wanted some tips and stuff. I'm doing this on Photoshop CS2; is that ok? The rocks are coal rocks. I can make the sky look really blendy, but should I? Won't it ruin the the other pixely things? Thanks :]
lemonfish
For doing pixels most people use Mspaint. I made mine using mspaint and it's probably best to start that way. Go to the sticky about tips for new pixelers.
venomai
For doing pixels most people use Mspaint. I made mine using mspaint and it's probably best to start that way. Sorry, but I don't agree with this. If you own Photoshop CS, there is absolutely no reason to be using MSPaint. Put it this way, If you had both a hand and a foot and your hand was better for drawing, would you ever use your foot to draw with? As long as you follow the "sprite/pixel rules" (ie: no brushing, filters, etc.) Photoshop is a very fine choice of program. Now, with that out of the way, great sig! The sky's colours look fab, the blending is great right now. However it's looking a little plain near the bottom of the sky, maybe some clouds or something could spice it up? (note: do things like this on a diff layer ;) don't wanna ruin your sky) Also you should try and clean up your lines, try to keep them at about 1px thick. The horizon line looks like 2-3px thick, which should be fixed. :) Lastly, don't forget to use some lighter shades & highlights on the rocks, and try to avoid pillow shading. :) Good luck, keep it up! To be honest I've never tryed using photoshop ( can't afford it ) and if you think it's best go ahead. I know there are quite a few of the top pixelers who use Mspaint Back to the picture: 1. The lines of the landscape are too thick - You need to make them thinner and maybe change them to a darker colour of the landscape rather than black. 2. The coal rocks' bases are too flat, to change that maybe you should go a bit wild and make them more pointy. 3. The light source of the coal rocks is in front of them, however the light is behind them. Only some minor faults, other than that it's a brilliant start and you should defiantely continue. venomai
I agree, if you don't own PS there's no point in buying it simply for pixels. But seeing as how the OP already owns PS, there's no need to encourage him to "downgrade" to MSPaint. A couple of the top pixelers here may use MSPaint, but that doesn't mean it's worth using next to photoshop. And most freeware programs (eg. Graphics Gale) are still much more effective than a program like MSPaint. But "to each his/her own," I guess. Just keep in mind that there is nothing "cheap" about photoshop, and it in no way requires "less skill" to use.
dogtag_dez
I've got gale and photoshop, but I use graphics gale for pixelling. It's designed for it, and (I find) it's way easier to use than photoshop for that sort of stuff. It's adapted to it in lots of ways (eg. right click to select a colour). Worth downloading imo. :D

WindStriker
Alright, thanks for the tips guys. I'm just starting pixeling and learning how to shade properly. I wanted to know, for the sky, should i do 1-3px transitions or have random transitions? The horizon is too think, I'll fix that later. The shading on the coal is wack (I know), but I wanted to try shading and experiment and I like the outcome just because it's my first time actually shading. Thanks again :]
