Guest GhostRanger
For those who don't know, in about 40 minutes, Steve Jobs will be giving his speech at the Macworld San Francisco 2006 conference. This is a big deal for Mac users everywhere - last year at this time we saw the release of things like the Mac Mini and the iPod Shuffle. Whether or not you Apple computers - a good deal of you all appreciate the convenience and slick look of your iPod - and all of you I'm sure can appreciate the influence Macintosh has in the world of technology (especially digital music). There are lots of rumors flying around of course, and Macrumors is giving live text coverage of the speech on their website. Here are some things we migh see come out of this conference: Kevin Rose posted on his blog last minute claims of what will be coming at Macworld San Francisco. This includes a "15" Intel Macbook" which ships in February, an iPod FM receiver, iWork/iLife '06, New Remote, Photocasting via iPhoto and OS X 10.4.4 with new Widgets. He claims to have had accurate information in the past, and also that these will be the new products released from Apple at Macworld. PowerPage.org posts an unusual report claiming that Apple would be releasing 42inch and 50inch Plasma Displays at Macworld San Francisco. That possibility alone would be quite unusual for Apple, but the report describes that the new plasma displays will be powered by Intel's recently announced Viiv multimedia platform running Mac OS X 10.4.4 for x86 (Intel). Prices for the displays/computers are reportedly $2599 and $3299. The report is unusual in that it is written as a story, presumably to hide the source of the information. Of note, ThinkSecret has recently suggested that Apple will be releasing a larger than 30" Cinema Display. Current Apple Cinema Displays rely on LCD technology -- not Plasma. However, throughout the industry, 42" is typically where the Plasma sets start, while LCD's become significantly more expensive at these larger sizes. Meanwhile, there have been ongoing reports of a Viiv-Apple connection. An astute reader has noted a slip-up on Apple's Garageband website which reveals that iLife '06 and a product called "iWeb" will soon be released -- presumably at Macworld San Francisco. The Apple page provides links discussions on "iWeb", listed as a product along side iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand and iTunes. Under additional resources, they list a link to "iLife '06 features". The iWeb link is not yet live, while the iLife link simply points to Apple's general iLife pages. The link referenced in that is here. The bottom right of the page has a link to iLife 06 and iWeb. There are also lots of rumors about either discontinuing and/or replacing the iPod shuffle with a long awaited screen. Last year's release of the Shuffle met a lot of resistance to this feature and Apple has indicated the current version of the Shuffle will not be sold anymore. Augsback
Yeah I can't wait to see what Steve has to reveal in his Keynote. I believe they will release a new TV and a better and smaller notebook since those are two hot items on the market today. But this wont compare as what just went on last week at CES. :P
