Burger King Decapitates Its 'King' Mascot

Featured Replies

I don't think they use the king in the UK adverts anyway (never seen one). Most do what they say above, show the ingredients and the burgers, seem a bit boring to me.

I never go to Burger king. Why? Because they aren't in good locations. McDonalds has a nack of being in the right place when I want fast food, simple as that. No advertising, no preference in food, just location and ease.

They quite often used the King in the adverts, especially in more recent ones. They were a lil funny but not too great.

Really? I've lived in the UK since I was an infant and I've never seen the King in this country. Then again, I don't watch much TV.

Here's one that I found, though it's a little old now:

Hmm...I worked for burger king for two years. I personally didn't like 'the king' to much. Wasn't even really a big fan of the food as well.

The news article I read also pointed out that they might bring back the King later, in some different capacity.

Maybe I'm being thick, but what other possible purpose could a man dressed as a King with a plastic face and crown fulfil other than mascot? Chief Operations Officer?

Sorry, I'll clarify. I didn't mean to suggest that they would bring him back OTHER than a mascot. I meant to say that the marketing using him as a mascot would probably change. They might go back to how he was presented before, when he was clearly an answer to Ronald McDonald.

Ugh. If I'm condescending in tone, I don't mean it, but let me explain how he was originally used, because I'm old enough to remember. The King in his first incarnation was not a guy hidden in a big plastic torso. He was more like Ronald has been over the ages; they had an actor in more theatrical sort of garb and makeup. There was no obstruction of vision because the actor's face could be clearly seen. Check it out:

(there a few more commercials in this particular series floating around the Internet)

EDIT: I don't know if these commercials aired outside the US, more particularly if they aired in the UK. Ask Fat Slug, I guess, or another UK Tip.It'er that's over thirtysomething like me.

Plastic Head King is in it, though he isn't the star. It's by the Crispin Porter + Bogusky agency mentioned in the news story.
