Progressive rock

So, who on TIF is into this stuff?

I'm going to start with some RIO/Avant-prog, but feel free to go with any prog you want to share. if you don't know what I'm talking about, Progarchives is a good resource.

To dip your toes into the genre, Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses' Perils is pretty good, if you don't mind the borderline Halloween atmosphere (as opposed to actually scary).

The Manfauna EP is a little less straightforward with its 5 minute drone piece in the middle...

Guapo shares three members with Miasma. More complex harmonically and rhythmically, more synths, more drones, less precise, and far scarier. Kick-ass album cover on this, too. I can't say what I think of each album because I've just discovered them. Not all their pieces are this ambient...

...as can be heard after four minutes of Magma-esque piano in Black Oni III:

OK, enough with those two. U Totem is an American supergroup which shares members with the 5uu's and Motor Totemist Guild. They blend modern classical and RIO. Both of their albums are released on Cuneiform Records, as is the case with at least one of Guapo's. get ready for some atonality.

I wanted to add Dance of the Awkward, but it's not on youtube. Live will have to do. Shorter, not atonal, but still very unusual. Wouldn't be avant-prog if it wasn't for the rhythm section. The noise intro was added by the uploader.

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Camera guy: Whoa, haha, are you okay dude?

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

Camera guy: still laughing

Matt: You want the funny shit that happens here and there, you think it comes out of your [bleep]ing [wagon] pushes garbage can down, don't you? You think it's funny? It comes out of here! running towards Camera guy

Camera guy: runs away still laughing

Matt: You think the funny comes out of your mother[bleep]ing creativity? Comes out of Satan, mother[bleep]er! nn--ngh! pushes Camera guy down

Camera guy: Hoooholy [bleep]!

Matt: FUNNY ISN'T REAL! FUNNY ISN'T REAL!

My god I've loved all of the Prog rock you've showed me so far. I haven't really branched out into the more avant-garde stuff that you seem to post as much as I'd like to, however I'm pretty decent with the older stuff. Definitely going to check out everything you've posted here though.

Newer prog rock doesn't come up too frequently it seems (or maybe I'm just not following the right websites, lol), but Beardfish is a pretty great modern prog rock band:

Of course there's also the obvious Steven Wilson projects floating around; however I feel that most of his recent material has been dropping in quality after Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet; That new Storm Corrosion album he dropped with Mikael Akerfeldt was a snooze fest. However Porcupine tree was the shit back in its peak:

All I really feel like posting for now, I'm curious if there's anyone else into the genre though.

I don't like progressive that much, but most of the stuff I listen to is in the same vein.

The For Carnation is a slow, melodic, poetic band that has roots in the Post-Rock band Slint. They're pretty relaxing, and are good for those lonely nights :3

Oceansize is my favorite band. Their music encompasses a number of influences, notably post-rock, shoegaze, heavy metal, and progressive rock. It was hard to pick one song to show you, but I think the one I chose is a good sample.

Dredg's El Cielo album is one of the best I've heard in my life. It's fairly slow moving, but everything flows so well. It's like water slowly rushing through your ears.

Sigur Ros is another post-rock band. They're pretty sad at times, but other songs are sorta uplifting. It's nice.

Jazz influenced prog (I liked Beardfish, didn't like the first track or the Porcupine Tree song(I've only ever listened to that one by them, actually; I do hate to hear a cool verse flow into a boring chorus)).

This band's from Israel. Just read that their keyboard player died in 2008... Only the good die young. The band's working on recording his unreleased compositions.

The rhythmic energy of hardcore and metal with the language of jazz: two pianos, two keyboards, one drummer (but he's an octopus). It's in 15/8 or 3 times 5/8, I don't know.

Post-rock, since Hedgehog has started:

Miasma's guitarist and Guapo's keyboardist, Daniel O'Sullivan (he's in like 60 projects, including Sunn O))) and Ulver). Post-rock at first but it gets more gothic and doomy as it goes. Don't know if the picture has anything to do with O'Sullivan.

While I'm at it, I might as well post my own composition. This took me a year to finish. Sequenced on FL Studio.
