i press "play now" on the runescape homepage, yet loading runescape any other way works perfectly hence why i dont know whats going on :/

Sounds like your java might be causing some issues, you could try re-installing java by following the steps in the article at http://kb.swiftkit.net/question-runescape-wont-load.html

if my java was to fault it would fail when loading it the same way through the website version...
