Guides - The Bird and the Beast - Rewards - God Tokens...Your token is upgraded automatically if you equip it in your pocket slot. Upgrades occur based on your total accumulated renown, including both spent and unspent.

 

 

God Tokens don't automatically upgrade if you leave it equip.. You have to check contribution or you can equip it again

It's slightly bad wording but that is what they mean:

When you equip it, it auto-upgrades opposed to it will upgrade itself automatically whilst equipped.
