Barrows tunnels question

If you open the chest in the barrows, the tunnels are shaking.

 

Can you die of it, can it lower your skills or something else dangerous?

 

Or can you just walk back to the ladder and start a new trip, I'm new in barrowing, and now i always ecto after i opened the chest

When the tunnel is shaking, your health will go down every ? seconds (dunno how long) but it doesn't lower your health alot, so you can easily walk back to the ladder and start over again if you have enough food etc. left
