I'm up to the part where Zanik discovers the trapdoor. I can't get past the guards though

Just talk to Zanik and do what she says and you will be fine.

where is the trapdoor anyway?in the jail?

the trap door is located near the back of the main room, behind the stage. If you walk near that area, Zanik should spot it for you.
