Really F2P wise the only mage equipment is full blue/black wizard robes which are both drops from the corresponding wizard and then you just buy skirt from Varrock Clothes Store and hat from Port Sarim Magic Shop. If you want to get more specific, my favorite set-up is yellow cape, magic amulet, anti-dragon shield, gold gloves, rainbow boots, and diamond ring with your main outfit being the full blue wizard. And for leveling just use the next best attack spell if you want to gain hitpoints experience as well or use spells like enchant/confuse if you don't want the hitpoint experience. One last thing to keep in mind is runecrafting comes in handy as runes can become quite expensive. However as an F2P player you can only create the four elemental runes and body and mind runes. That's my set-up. Run with it.

By the way, if you want to get fancy with it, your defense is level 40, and you have some dough, buy full blue wizard (g) with a rune kite (g). I promise it's the sickest thing you'll ever see!! Hope I've helped!
