I seem to have lost my cat

Here's the problem: I'm doing rat catchers, and I lost my cat. It got stuck behind the wall after it killed the king rat, so I figured I'd leave and it would show up behind me, but it didnt. Normally i could buy a new one and its no big deal. But if I try to get another cat Gertrude tells me I need to finish raising the one I already have. I looked in my bank, even went back to the place where I left my cat, and I can't figure out what to do. Any ideas?
