Is search still broken?

Featured Replies

You may remember me, a few months ago I made a post about the search not working for something like 'prayer' or 'page', I can't quite remember.

Anyhoo, was it ever fixed? Just because I'm thinking of playing runescape for a bit again, so I just came back to have look around the forums for things like prices etc. I typed 'law' and 'laws' into the search and got no results at all. I then tried to search for 'search' before posting this and guess what...no results! I'm searching under the first option of any terms or query as entered. Why is it that these words aren't getting any results?

And like last time, use something that isn't so broad. If a word is too common, phpbb is going to tell you that there are no results, rather than list hundreds of pages of rusults.

I see, so it's a case of there simply being far too many results for it to handle? Nobody told me that last time. Would it work better if I restricted it to specific forums, or groups of forums? I don't know how to make these searches narrower enough to get results without ruling out some of the stuff I'm looking for.

Yes, it is the case of there being too many results. And apparently we did tell you that last time (http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=501 ... =search%2A). And as a rule of thumb, you should always be restricting yourself to at least a category.

While that will not help you with very common words (eg: prayer, page, etc), you can work your way around that using wild card searches. Like what I did above, 'search' by itself was too common, but 'search*' was covering all variations of the word. I also restricted it to the title only, which made the results set smaller.

So you did! Sorry about that. How does it work with wildcard searches as opposed to specific word searches? I'd have thought wildcard searches would yield even more results than a specific word search? Do these forums ever get purged, and all old threads wiped out?
