I read the skill guide on farming, and maybe there's something wrong with me here, but when I go to the farming patches, I can't find the place to make the compost. Where are they in relation to the patches?

They are the little bins near the patch. They'll have the lid open, and they're called "Compost Bins". You should see it, keep looking.
