"Spammy" Pictures in Off-Topic

Recommended Posts

I would like to discuss the general dislike of pictures among mods in the OT forum.

For example:

this thread http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=596572 was locked.

Spam much? I don't care if this topic isn't "serious", that doesn't mean you can bring out all those spammy pictures.

The OP asked about things that can kill you, and people posted pictures that were things that could kill them. There was nothing spammy about it.

I can simplify "bad" pictures into two types:

1) Spam

2) Not Family-Friendly

In most of the OT threads/posts that have been locked/deleted, the image didn't fit into either 1 or 2. If we add a 3rd category, however, things start to make sense.

3) pictures with words on them

To put it simply, the mods don't like pictures with words on them, and

the "spammy pictures" argument:

I've seen a lot of spammy pictures in Off-Topic. The kinds of pictures I'm referring to is this seemingly never-ending joke with those weird owl pictures and the like. Or, especially in the Off-Topic forums, people will post a picture that they think is funny that barely relates to the topic in question.

Can't really be used because...well...the pictures aren't spammy.

So I don't really know what you should do to fix this. Maybe add a rule that says "No funny pictures"?

Making a "share random pictures" sticky is like making a "share random emoticons" sticky. Emoticons are no fun unless they're used in the context of a specific topic. What makes you think pictures are any different?

I see where you're going with this but I'm not sure if you were here on New Year's Eve. Because of a couple of us there were 10+ topics locked that night because of spam. A lot of that spam came from those pictures being used to drag thee topic off the original topic. I enjoy the funny pictures and I think they should be allowed in topics, but I think they need to be used in moderation. If I remember correctly, you're only allowed to have 10 emoticons in a post otherwise they could really become spammy. I suggest allowing the pictures to be used in topics, but enforce a "use them in moderation" rule so that they don't become spammy.

I am not talking about threads that picture-spam. I am talking about threads that are locked or deleted just because they have pictures, like the one I used as an example.
