Does it matter where your wireless adapter or your router is located? Like are there things that affect the signal strength (like if there is metal between them or something)?

Yes. Signal strength is affected by distance, line of sight and the materials between the points. It can also be affected by interference from microwave ovens and bluetooth devices. Depending on the strength of the signal, 802.11g will transmit at data rates between 1Mb/s and 54 Mb/s.
