DragnFly
There is already a link above the forum in regards to accessing IRC, however I felt posting instructions on the forum itself would come in helpful as well as those who where confused could ask questions to other users here. I have also broke it down in more detail than the instructions listed on tip.it's IRC instruction page, in order to help beginners understand better. These instructions assume you are a first time user, obviously, as people who have used IRC before will already know how to connect. Connecting to IRC The first step to connecting to IRC is choosing which method you wish to use to connect. For the sake of these instructions, I will post methods of connecting using the onsite Java client and mirc. Please read chapter #1 for the Java client or chapter #2 for mirc. Chapter #1 - Using the Java IRC client to connect #1. Load Tip.its IRC client page into your web browser: http://forum.tip.it/chat.php #2. Log into the forums from there, if you are not already logged in. It is set up to automatically log in using your forum nickname to the #RuneScape and #Help channels. Congratulations, you have successfully connected to IRC. What you should see should look something like this: The bits I blurred out where timestamps, which I felt where irrelevant to the instructions here. Please read the instructions on tip.it's IRC page regarding registration and nickname identification here: http://tip.it/runescape/index.php?page=chat.htm#nick Chapter #2 - Using Mirc to connect #1. You will need to download the mirc IRC client from its homepage, http://www.mirc.com #2. After downloading it, run the installer and follow its instructions. #3. When you open mirc, you should see a prompt like this: Just click continue to proceed. Dont worry about the prompt, its still perfectly usable after 30 days it just likes to nag you to register it, which you should consider if you like using the program. #4. A dialog like the following should pop up: * In the "Full Name" field, I advise putting your runescape or forum name in here and strongly recommend against putting in your actual name. * In the "Email Address" field, I suggest entering something such as [email protected]. Avoid filling in an actual email address. * In the "Nickname" field, you will need to choose the name you wish to be known as on IRC. It should be under 16 characters, and not contain profanity. Again, I advise using your Runescape name or forums name. * In the "Alternative" field, I advise putting the same name as the "Nickname" field, followed by a 2 or another number. Although it can be unique, should you choose to have a unique fallback name. When you have finished, it should look something like the following: #5. Click the "Servers" option under connect. You should receive the following dialog: Double click the mini IRCnet folder to close it, then click the Add button on the side. The following dialog should appear: * In the "Description" field, enter "Tip.it". * In the "IRC Server" field, enter "irc.tip.it". * In the "Ports" field, leave it set to 6667. * In the "Group" field, enter "Tip.it". * In the "Password" field, leave it blank. It should look like this: Click "Add". #6. You should now see Tip.it in your servers list, like the following: The Tip.it server, inside of the tip.it folder should already be highlighted. If it isn't, click it to highlight it and press the "Select" button on the right side. #7. Go back to the main Connect dialog, and ensure Tip.it is listed under the "Server" option, like so: If so, click the "Connect" button. The following dialog should pop up: #8. Press the "Add" button, the following dialog will open: * In the "Channel" field, enter "#RuneScape". * In the "Password" field, leave it blank. * In the "Description" field, type "Tip.it Chat Room". * In the "Networks" field, click add button below it and select "Tip.it". * In the "Options" field, check "Join on connect" and leave "Minimize on join" unchecked. * In the "Folder" field, leave it blank. It should look like the following: Click the "OK" button. Then in "mIRC Favorites" dialog, uncheck the "Pop up favorites on connect" option. Then click "Join". Congratuations, you have successfully connected to IRC. For future connects it will be easier to connect. After opening mirc, close the About dialog by pressing continue, press the Options dialog button on the toolbar (hammer and folder button), ensure "Tip.It" is still the selected server and press the connect button. Please read the instructions on tip.it's IRC page regarding registration and nickname identification here: http://tip.it/runescape/index.php?page=chat.htm#nick Frequently Asked Questions What is IRC? IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, one of the oldest forms of chat on the internet dating back to 1988. What is a network/server? A IRC network can consist of one or more servers. Tip.it's currently consists of a single IRC server. Other popular networks, such as dalnet, efnet and undernet are networks consisting of several servers linked together, and able to communiate with other servers on their peticular network. What are channels? A channel is a name for a chatroom on an IRC network. What is NickServ? Alot of IRC networks offer a form of nickname registration, usually called NickServ, to protect your nickname and prevent others from posing as someone they are not. Tip.it's IRC offers this feature. What are voices, halfops, ops, protected ops, and founders. Voiced users and above can chat when the channel is set to moderated, which is uncommon, hence the name voice. Half operators, or halfops, have some of the power normal operators do. Ops, or operators are staff in charge of running the channel. Protected ops have the same power as other operators, but cannot be kicked from the room by anyone other than the founder. Founder is the individual who created the room, and have the final say in all matters regarding the room. You will recognize these users in the names lists, voiced users have a + by their names, halfops have a %, ops have a @, protected ops have a &, and the founder has a ~. Do NOT beg for ops, voice or any other status in the room. Like on the boards, it will only serve to annoy the staff and likely to help you receive a ban from the room. What are the rules for using Tip.it's IRC network? Read them here: http://tip.it/runescape/index.php?page=chat.htm#rules I've been banned, what should I do? Again, see the instructions here: http://tip.it/runescape/index.php?page=chat.htm#bans Are their any other programs to connect to IRC? Plenty! Its a common misconception amongst beginners that IRC is a program, where as its in actuality a protocol. Think of it like web browsers and email clients, there are many different programs that will allow you to use IRC, which one you decide to use is entirely up to you. Search the internet to find plenty of others. D's guide to 1 Item objects
Dragon_lord
Looks quite useful. Good job! :D But you chose to put it in the wrong forum. Don't worry, I'm sure a Moderator will move it to the appropriate forum (Player Made Guides) shortly  Pretty much what Dragon said.Thread terminated.I guess that means I'm the thread Terminator? No Tip.Iters were harmed in the making of this post.
