I am at the part of the quest where you have to pull the lever over that trap door before you face the fire boss. Except, when i check for traps i find nothing and then I pull the lever and fall down into a pit... help? what am i doing wrong

Could it be your thieving level? I think the quest requires lvl 42 to check and disable the trap, so that might be a reason.
