Apologies for my apparent lack of enthusiasm/organisation for this project guys, I've loved all your posts and bands and they've been great to read. I'll be writing mine soon.

Massive thanks to klankaos for this epic post on Rush.

Yeah, this seems like a long post. I honestly don't expect that anyone will read all of it - I expect the hardcore Rush fans I know on these forums will give out somewhere in the middle of the discography. If you've never heard of Rush, there's of course the blurb on the band and members at the start, a Youtube clip of a feature of their talents, and for each album there's another Youtube clip. Try to listen to a couple at least - they're my personal favourites from each album. If this brings one person into listening to Rush, I'll consider myself a success. =D

Rush

Rush are an ancient classic rock band that have been around for over thirty years. However, age hasn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t slowed them down ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ they released their latest album (Snakes and Arrows) in May 2007 and wrapped up the Snakes and Arrows tour on November 3rd, 2007. After producing eighteen original studio albums and over fifteen collected greatest hits albums, live albums and live DVDs, Rush still show no sign of stopping. Originally formed in 1974 by Geddy Lee (vocals), Alex Lifeson(guitar) and John Rutsey(drums), Rush produced their self-titled debut album in 1976. However, after their first tour, Rutsey was forced to leave the band due to issues with diabetes and a dislike of touring. Rush then picked up a man who was destined to become one of the most critically acclaimed drummers ever to live ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ Neil Peart. Soon after joining the band, Neil became the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s lyricist, as neither of the others were interested, and Neil was an avid reader and brilliant writer. Their dynamic obviously worked, as shown by their longevity and popularity throughout the years.

Geddy Lee

Born Gary Lee Weinrib, Geddy changed his name later on to reflect his Yiddish grandmother̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s heavily accented pronunciation of it, also dropping his last name. Geddy was a bass player from a very young age. His talent manifested itself early on in his life, and he played in various young bands before starting Rush. Early on in the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s playing, Geddy was kicked from the band for a time because he and John Rutsey had a falling-out. However, he was soon allowed back, and the band then went on to produce their first album. Geddy has influenced many later bassists, and has been cited as inspiration for Les Claypool of Primus, Cliff Burton of Metallica, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, and John Myung of Dream Theater.

Alex Lifeson

Alex also chose to change his name after becoming part of the band. His name originally reflected his Jewish background, and is actually Alex Zivojinovich, which literally translated means ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâson of life̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. He was first a piano player, but didn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t have much skill at that. He then progressed through violin, which he didn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t enjoy enough to carry on with, through to guitar, where he finally found his calling. His skill lies in his use of odd time signatures, strong chord beats interspersed with fast riffs, and his ability to play both melody and rhythm at the same time.

Neil Peart

6pjk03l.jpg

Neil is the only member of the band today that was not in the band since day one. He was told by his agent to join Rush after the first album, promised they were ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâgoing places̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. He was skeptical, but decided to try it out, and it worked out well. After trying his playing in his hometown of Toronto, he decided to move to London to try his luck there. Finding no more work there than here, he returned and was asked to join Rush. He also signed on as the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s lyricist, and replaced John Rutsey (a mediocre drummer at best). The qualities of both the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s lyrics and the drumming improved greatly with the entrance of Peart, and have stayed that way ever since. He also brought the band into a more progressive stage, with the first album including him having the eight-minute ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâBy-Tor and the Snow Dog̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first mini-epic. The next album, Caress of Steel, included the nineteen-minute ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFountain of Lamnetḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. The band have written three of these ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâepic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ pieces, including ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâ2112̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâHemispheres̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢.

Rush

6sqc393.jpg

Released in 1974, this album was Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s debut with John Rutsey drumming. His drum arrangements are far simpler than any Peart arrangements, and the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s lyrics are also lower-quality. The music is simple, but shows promise of becoming what it is today.

Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢75 release Fly By Night was the first album to feature Peart̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s significantly stronger drumming, and also his fantasy and literature-based lyrics. Peart deliberately chose to stay away from the topic of love in his lyrics, seeing it as too clichÃÆÃâÃâéd, and so was driven towards the literary style of lyrics. This album still held onto the strong, hard-rock sound of the previous album.

Caress of Steel

6ku0ndh.jpg

Caress of Steel saw the introduction of Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first progressive ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâepic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ piece, The Fountain of Lamneth. However, Rush did not completely follow the progressive trend. Most progressive pieces of the day had the same fantasy- or literature-based lyrics as The Fountain of Lamneth ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ however, Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s musical style differed greatly from most progressive bands. They were far more hard-rock, as compared to the soft sounds of other progressive bands. Caress of Steel was meant to be Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâbreakthrougḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ album, but it ended up selling worse than the previous record, and the tour was terrible, earning the nickname ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâDown the Tubes tour̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢.

2112

8fov6lw.jpg

At this point in their career, Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s music really took a turn for the better. After being urged by their record company to do something more conformist and pop-like, the band still chose to write another ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâepic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ progressive piece. However, to much surprise on all fronts, 2112 sold the best of any Rush album, going multi-platinum in both the states and Canada. This was Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first taste of huge commercial success, and the tour was equally popular. This album also contained two songs written by Geddy and Alex, ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâTears̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâLessons̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, respectively. The lyrics and music to ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâTears̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ are not nearly so hard-rock as their other pieces, and it was one of the last tracks Geddy ever wrote for the band. ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâLessons̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ was also the last track Alex wrote for the band, excepting their triple collaboration on ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâChemistry̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ later on. ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâTears̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ was also the first song by the band to feature a musician not in the band ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ Hugh Syme played synthesizers for the band.

A Farewell to Kings

85o4w1h.jpg

After 2112, Rush were enjoying large success, and were worn out from their creations of ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Fountain of Lamnetḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâ2112̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, which the band has cited as being ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâtaxing̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâovertiring̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. They instead chose, for their next album, much less hard-rock feel, emphasized in the introductions to ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâA Farewell to Kings̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâCloser To The Heart̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. The song ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâCloser To The Heart̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ became one of their largest hits ever, and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâA Farewell to Kings̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ also enjoyed moderate popularity. ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâCygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ served to set the stage for their final ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâepic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ piece on the next album, ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâHemispheres̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, as a prologue.

Hemispheres

6p9xto3.jpg

This album marked the final ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâepic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ piece of Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s career ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ Hemispheres, which tells the story of the Greek gods of emotion and rationality fighting, and being calmed by the god of balance, who is the space-traveller from the song ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâCygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ from the previous album. It also has the distinction of having the least number of tracks on any Rush album recorded, with only four songs on the album. It also saw Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first of many great instrumental pieces, La Villa Strangiato. This album did not enjoy quite the commercial success the previous two did, but still managed to go platinum in the US, becoming the fourth in a string of twenty-three gold and platinum Rush albums, to put them tied with Kiss for the third-longest string ever.

Permanent Waves

This was Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s transition album from progressive rock to popular rock. Although the album does include the nine-minute, three-chapter Natural Science, the other songs on the album are geared more towards the popular culture. For this album, Neil had been working on another ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâepic̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ song, but had to shelve the project simply because it did not fit with the tone of the other songs on the album. Rush also began to play around with recording tricks on this album as well, notably the recording of the intro to Natural Science in a mountainous valley to make it echo. This album does not contain so much of the playing around with time signatures of the previous albums, either, which were one of the characteristics of the progressive sound Rush were no longer attempting to present.

This album was perhaps Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s most radio-friendly album, having three of Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s greatest radio hits ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Red Barchetta. Again, following in the groove of Permanent Waves, the progressive sound was nearly completely sloughed off, with Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s final shot coming in the form of the eleven minute ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Camera Eye̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Red Barchetta remain hits at Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s live shows to this day. The album also included another favourite, the instrumental ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâYYZ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first of four instrumentals to be nominated for the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâBest Rock Instrumental Performance̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ Grammy, YYZ is very different from the previous instrumental ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâLa Villa Strangiato̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, and sets the tone for Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s instrumentals to date. The album also included the third part in a reverse-recorded sequence, ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâWitch Hunt̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâWitch Hunt̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ was listed as being ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâPart III of the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFear̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ trilogy̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ on the album. Parts II and I were recorded on later albums, and a final addition to the sequence was recorded very later on in 2002, with Vapor Trails.

Signals

82clcar.jpg

Signals was a special album for Rush in that it heralded the coming of the so-called ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâsynthesizer age̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. For this album, the band consulted and decided that Alex̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s guitar would take as much of a background role as possible in a band of three people. Admittedly, it was not always constricted to that role ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Analog Kid̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ has a very strong guitar intro/main riff. However, as is seen in ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâLosing It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâSubdivisions̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ particularly, Geddy̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s synths definitely are used far more to take up the space that Alex leaves. This age lasted through the next four albums, and produced what is often hailed by Rush fans as some of their best work later on. This album also contained the only album to ever have lyrics with contributions by all three band members (̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâChemistry̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢), and was the second album to feature an outside artist (Ben Mink on ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâLosing It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢). The final distinguishing feature of the album was the second part of the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFear̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ sequence, started on Moving Pictures with Witch Hunt.

Grace Under Pressure

6ssubee.jpg

Grace Under Pressure was one of Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s least remarkable albums. An issue for this album was the parting of Terry Brown from the band, the producer who had helped Rush to break into the mainstream and produced every one of their albums up until that date. They then went through a couple of different producers before settling on producing the album themselves with help for Peter Henderson. This album is also distinguished by the song ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâRed Sector A̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, which was about the holocaust and presented a much darker mood than most of what Rush had done before, and the song ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Enemy Within̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, which was part I of the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFear̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ sequence.

Power Windows

6pjw46p.jpg

Power Windows is considered by many Rush fans to be the penultimate Rush record (or at least one of the best). Its tone changed amazingly from the previous album, becoming more upbeat, with single notes taking precedence over chords. This album was another with many hits, including ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâManhattan Project̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. This album was, although still largely synthesized, so different from the previous two albums that it took many fans completely by surprise. The album̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s lyrics were centered on the theme of power, as all the songs were about some manifestation of power, whether it be money (̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Big Money̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢), emotion (̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâEmotion Detector̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢) or nuclear war (̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâManhattan Project̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢).

Hold Your Fire

6ntgo49.jpg

This album had the distinction of being the final album of the synthesizer age. Continuing in the musical trend of the previous album, it was much more upbeat than the previous two albums of the age, and was a favourite, though not so much as Power Windows was. However, it included the hit song ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâForce Ten̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, which has been a Rush favourite at concerts since it was recorded. For the first time, this album̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâTime Stand Still̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ featured the vocals of someone outside the band ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ Til Tuesday̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s Aimee Mann. While still considered a part of the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâsynthesizer age̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, Hold Your Fire contains much stronger guitar riffs and countermelodies than any previous, and begins Rush ascension from the age into the next album, which was radically different.

Presto

720u9fc.jpg

After the synthesizer age, Rush went into an era of soft rock, which then slowly morphed over the years into a hard rock sound not unlike their original sound. Presto was the beginning. Tracks such as ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâSuperconductor̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâAnagram (for Mongo)̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ were different from anything Rush had done before. Ironically, this (one of Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s least heavy-metal albums) won two Junos, one of which was Best Heavy Metal Album. Some of the tracks on the album were still a little synth-driven, but most were more string-based, and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Pass̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ is one of the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first songs to feature bass chords. The song ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâScars̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ also features a very drum-intensive sequence, which has been incorporated into all of Neil̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s live solo performances since.

Roll the Bones

6lak1z5.jpg

Roll the Bones was much farther from the synthesizer age than Presto had been. The guitar was hugely more important in the songs of this album, and the arrangements far different, paving the way for the different style of many songs from Counterparts. The album was themed much around chance, with the title track ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâRoll the Bones̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ on dice, ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Big Wheel̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ about roulette, ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFace Up̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ about cards, ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâGhost Of A Chance̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ about chance in general, and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâYou Bet Your Life̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ revolving around gambling. The album peaked at #3 on the Us Billboard charts, the first album to break in to the Top 5 since Moving Pictures. The album also contained the live hit ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâDreamline̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, which has been a crowd and band favourite in shows ever since. Roll the Bones included, as well, a new instrumental, the first since Moving Pictures̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâYYZ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe instrumental ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâWhere̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s My Thing?̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ was listed as being Part Four of the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâGangster of Boats̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ trilogy, which is actually nonexistent.

Counterparts

89tcnih.jpg

Counterparts is a very musically advanced album, seen especially in many of Geddy̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s bass lines. The band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s music picked up a lot during this period. However, the musical style is much different from most of their earlier work ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ as is the lyrical style. This album contained Neil̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first and only forays into the world of love- and sex-related lyrics (seen in Cold Fire, Alien Shore and The Speed Of Love), although his writing style still differs hugely from most artists. Many non-Rush fans enjoy this album due to the difference in musical styles ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ this was also the case with Presto. Counterparts is hailed by many fans as one of the greatest works by Rush, and by others as not nearly as good as their earlier work. Most think that the key to enjoying this album is repeated listening. This was Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s highest-charting record, peaking at #2 in the US.

Test for Echo

87daf47.jpg

Again, this album had the musical style of Counterparts on many songs. However, other songs were much more focused on clean electric or acoustic guitars, and uplifting, upbeat synths. Overall, the tone of the album really encompassed two very different sounds ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ the sounds on songs such as ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâDriven̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâTime and Motion̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, and the completely different ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâResist̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâTotem̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. However, all agree that this album had as much of Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s musical genius as Counterparts, even if it was different in tone. Many of the songs on this album feature heavy bass lines from Geddy, as did Counterparts, but the guitar style is far separated from the earlier albums.

Vapor Trails

72k2x6d.jpg

At this point in time, Rush took a hiatus from recording for over six years. Neil had had some deaths in the family very close together, and needed some time to get over it. This was the only time Rush ever considered breaking up. However, they decided to stay together, and in 2002 came back stronger than ever with the album Vapor Trails. This album featured a far, far more hard-rock sound than any album to date. This was due in part to the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s choice to forgo the use of synthesizers on this album to get a ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâmore hard-rock̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ feel, along with Alex̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s choice to get a more clean sound with no processed guitar sounds and no traditional guitar solos. They came back with the strong ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâOne Little Victory̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ as a single, which most agree was the heralding of a new age for Rush. However, they still show some progressive influences, particularly on the song ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFreeze̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, which used three different time signatures over the course of the six-minute song. ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFreeze̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ was also a late addition to the ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâFear̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ sequence, becoming the fourth part of what was meant to be a trilogy. They̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re now back stronger than ever, and the Vapor Trails tour brought the twenty-eighth year of Rush music.

Snakes and Arrows

864u9vk.jpg

And finally, we̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re brought up to the present day. Rush released Snakes and Arrows in May 2007, and kicked off the tour later that same month. The album was the same darker sound of Vapor Trails, but with a smoother musical feel, incorporating back into the songs all of the elements they had removed with the previous album. The album is much quieter and more introspective than most of their earlier work, with the possible exception of Counterparts and A Farewell to Kings. Snakes and Arrows also marks Rusḫ̢̢ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first instrumental in over ten years, and they came back with three ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ the acoustic guitar solo track ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâHope̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢, the near-bass-solo ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâMalignant Narcissism̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ and the more traditional ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹ÃâThe Main Monkey Business̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢. This album is the conclusion of the Rush discography to date.

Archives

Archives was simply a collection of the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s first three albums, recorded due to the fact that Rush believed they would not be recording any more after their next album.

Chronicles

Chronicles included pieces from all the band̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s albums from Rush to Presto.

You've succeeded in winning me over :D. I recently bought the spirit of radio compilation after playing "Tom Sawyer" on Rock Band. It's awesome.

Awesome. Tom Sawyer is an amazing song... The Spirit of Radio compilation is really a great album, having all of my favourites from that time period on it.

I'm really starting to get into these guys now. I bought 2112 and Moving pictures a couple weeks ago, and they were both fantastic, so yesterday I bought Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Power Windows (they had Rush's nearly whole discography in the 3 for $20 bin).

It's a shame, I was going to read your thoughts about those albums, but the post is unreadable after the roll-back :(.

Argh. Wow, bump from like the umpteenth page =)

I'm glad you're getting into them. If you liked 2112 and Moving Pictures, you're probably going to love Hemispheres especially. It's their most prog album - four songs, 45 minutes, and La Villa Strangiato and Hemispheres. Hemispheres being 20 minutes and La Villa Strangiato having six separate time signatures (3/4, 4/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, and 9/8) besides being one of their most musically together albums as well.

If I can find it on my computer, I'll post up what I had saved of the post, especially those three albums. Damn that rollback, I liked that post. =P

[hide=Three clean albums]Hemispheres

6p9xto3.jpg

This album marked the final "epic" piece of Rush's career, Hemispheres, which tells the story of the Greek gods of emotion and rationality fighting, and being calmed by the god of balance, who is the space-traveller from the song 'Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage' from the previous album. It also has the distinction of having the least number of tracks on any Rush album recorded, with only four songs on the album. It also saw Rush's first of many great instrumental pieces, La Villa Strangiato. This album did not enjoy quite the commercial success the previous two did, but still managed to go platinum in the US, becoming the fourth in a string of twenty-three gold and platinum Rush albums, to put them tied with Kiss for the third-longest string ever.

Permanent Waves

72bf709.jpg

This was Rush's transition album from progressive rock to popular rock. Although the album does include the nine-minute, three-chapter Natural Science, the other songs on the album are geared more towards the popular culture. For this album, Neil had been working on another epic song, but had to shelve the project simply because it did not fit with the tone of the other songs on the album.

Power Windows

6pjw46p.jpg

Power Windows is considered by many Rush fans to be the penultimate Rush record (or at least one of the best). Its tone changed amazingly from the previous album, becoming more upbeat, with single notes taking precedence over chords. This album was another with many hits, including 'Manhattan Project'. This album was, although still largely synthesized, so different from the previous two albums that it took many fans completely by surprise. The album's lyrics were centered on the theme of power, as all the songs were about some manifestation of power, whether it be money (The Big Money), emotion (Emotion ) or nuclear war (Manhattan Project).
