Fire surge, the highest spell, is what he was using. It might just not be apparent from the setup of his spellbook. You can pause as he turns it back on if you don't believe me/us :P

And yes it's always disappointing when RL stuff gets in the way. Just today I gave QBD another shot (I can range the thing fine but for some reason can't melee it for the life of me), and my friends barged into my room to play Super Smash Bros.

 

Almost died. Proud to say I didn't.

 

Of course, fire waves + tortured soul combo killed me a few minutes later, but whatever.
