Definitely. JRE 5.0_11 is probably a good one to use, I've had problems with the newer SE 6. Go here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp, and click on the download button for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11."
If you know the configuration for your system, you can reset the BIOS/CMOS by changing a jumper on the motherboard (generally labeled JMP1, you might want to check documentation). Then if you have a device, configure the BIOS so that that device is present. You might have configured the BIOS to look a for a specific device that is no longer present, that can be why it's being held up.
