  1. All right, let's bring some math into this. I can hear all of you cheering. After all, everybody loves math.

I most certainly do! At least, it's much better then throwing vague assumptions and hasty conclusions around.

There was a excellent post on the RSOF (fancy that!) by a guy named Guthix God that listed weapon speeds in terms of seconds-per-hit. I think it died, but I saved his results to a file on my computer for later evaluation, and it has proved very useful for discussions like this. I had used the longsword for quite a while, and had been pretty ambivalent about the whole controversy. Then I did the math, and quickly switched to the scimy.

Guthix God found that the longsword hits once every 3.04 seconds, and the scimitar hits once every 2.43 seconds.

From tip.it's max hit calculator, we can find the max hit of the longsword, the scimitar, and the longsword with special. At 80 strength, this is 19, 19, and 24, respectively.

Here then, is the max-damage-per-second of the weapons.

    • Dragon longsword - 6.25

      Dragon scimitar - 7.82

      Dragon longsword w/ special - 7.89

As far as damage goes, then, the only use of the Dragon longsword is its special attack, which deals out slightly higher damage per second then the scimy. However, if it's special attacks that we're talking about, why not use a dragon dagger, as others have suggested?

The longsword still has its uses. If you're fighting a monster that is especially weak to stab, you may want to opt for a longsword. Personally, I think the longsword looks more like a warrior's weapon then a scimitar, but that's personal opinion, and math doesn't really apply to that. :?

  2. I've been considering this same question for a long time.

Crystal bows are indeed faster then crossbows. In terms of seconds between each shot:

    Crystal Bow: 3.03

    Crystal Bow (rapid): 2.43

Crossbow (normal, phoenix, blurite or any metal): 3.655

    Crossbow (rapid): 3.03

Credit goes to a guy named Guthix God for finding this out.

I believe that a crystal bow max hit is anywhere between 25% - 20% of your ranged level, depending on it's charged status. It's hard to say, but from what I've seen a plain addy crossbow bolt max hit is somewhere around 30% of your ranged level.

If these assumptions are correct, in terms of average damage per second at level 80 ranged using rapid attack, you get 4.0 for the addy bolt, 4.1 for the fully charged crystal bow, and 3.3 for the lowest charge state.

Looking at costs, each crystal bow shot comes out to about 72 gp each (180k / 2500), and if addy bolts are 360 each, assuming a 20% loss rate, that will also be 72 gp for each shot.

Seems like the rune crossbow and addy bolts are the winner here, overall, though I can see how the crystal bow would be useful in certain situations.

    Edit: made some clarifications.

  3. I remember the first time I got the maze random event, almost a month after I had started Runescape. I was trading with someone West Varrock bank and had just negotiated a fantastic deal. However, right as I opened up the trade window to complete the transaction, the Mysterious Old Man appeared and whisked me away, much to my consternation, especially considering how good the deal was. What shocked me the most, though, was that the trade window remained open! Quickly I placed my goods in the window, hit the accept button, and received the cash I had desperately wanted.

Thus, we were able to complete the trade with me in the maze and he in West Varrock. :-s I wonder if they've fixed that yet, or if anyone else has had a similar experience..

  4. Do not poison any of them, add tips, make firearrows, or enchant them, as this will mess up the numbers.

Ah well, at least it's nice to see the effectiveness of enchanted bolts, even though it may not help out the calculator.

Here are some results from a lower range level:

Most of these are all the same at level 46 as well, using the same style of attack (rapid). The only differenced was that the mithril bolts hit 12.

A pic of the new max hit for the mith bolt:

  5. Thank you for the great guide Triquos. The Karamja gloves definitely make Brimhaven a more viable option for agility. It's a much more interesting way to train then the your normal agility courses, and you may have just inspired me to make a visit!

Speaking of non-standard agility courses, you may want to consider adding Skullball as a good way to train agility from levels 25-40, maybe even to 52. Skullball is in the Werewolf agility dungeon that becomes available after the Creature of Fenkenstrain quest, and I have found it to give faster xp then both the Gnome and Barbarian agility course.

    Here are my times:

    Gnome Course:

    XP per circuit: 86.5

    Time per circuit: 37

    XP per hour: 8,400

    Barbarian outpost:

    XP per circuit: 153

    Time per circuit: 38 sec

    XP per hour: 14,500

    Skullball:

    XP per circuit: 750

    Time per circuit: 2:30

    XP per hour: 18,000

Note that the times for Gnome and Barbarian are "best times" sustainable only when using potions, while times for the Skullball are average - many times I've completed it in under 2 minutes. Also, like the Gnome course, you will never fail an obstacle or take damage. It may take a couple of rounds, but once you have a good rhythm going, it's a great way to train agility quickly from a low level.
