A "crooked triangle" wouldn't be a triangle. I thought it would be a polygon. -This is from the Jagex manual on magic. These paragraphs clearly states that magic is NOT supposed to be a supporting skill although it can be used that way.

On free to play, meleers make up the majority, but to me mage and range are more usefull with ranged attacks and more ways to kill. It won't stop me complaining about the cost however. But for range, its pretty cheap. Well, cheaper than melee if you lose.
