its al a matter of chance. somtimes u smelt the ore some times you dont. ex. i had 28 iron ores and i smithed 26/28 and then only 10/28 the next time wish you luck with smelting! p.s. smelt steel!!!!

its a good idea, no loot from monsters isnt good (esp. Kalphite Queen)
