  1. Do human beings depend too much on themselves?

I think you might enjoy the musings of Jean Baudrillard.

Baudrillard argued that the transition from the earlier stage of competitive market capitalism to the stage of monopoly capitalism required increased attention to demand management, to augmenting and steering consumption. At this historical stage, from around 1920 to the 1960s, the need to intensify demand supplemented concern with lowering production costs and with expanding production. In this era of capitalist development, economic concentration, new production techniques, and the development of new technologies, accelerated capacity for mass production and capitalist corporations focused increased attention on managing consumption and creating needs for new prestigious goods, thus producing the regime of what Baudrillard has called sign-value.

On Baudrillard's analysis, advertising, packaging, display, fashion, "emancipated" sexuality, mass media and culture, and the proliferation of commodities multiplied the quantity of signs and spectacles, and produced a proliferation of sign-value. Henceforth, Baudrillard claims, commodities are not merely to be characterized by use-value and exchange value, as in Marx's theory of the commodity, but sign-value ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ã

  2. I for one think its ridiculous. What the hell do they think some middle aged woman screaming shrilly at some street gangs will do? Scare them off home?

    Hah!

Well let's say your skateboarding and a loud angry voice says "No Loitering. Please cease and desist and leave the parking lot at once." You turn and see a camera and some speakers. You give the camera the middle finger. But guess what? The camera has a picture of your face and your clothing, and a police officer can catch up with you in minutes and arrest you for criminal trespassing. Even if they don't, they can use face recognition technology to find you lickety split and show up at your house. What if you litter? The voice tells you to pick it up. Welcome to the police state. This is insanely scary, not ridiculous. It injects a police presence into the lives of private citizens constantly.

Now in your example, of a street gang, obviously a remote voice isn't going to stop a murder. But this only proves that the technology is being applied not to end crime, but to end individuality and freedom. You might argue that my rights are not being infringed, for if I am doing nothing wrong I have nothing to fear. However this is based on the assumption that all laws are good and correct, which is not true, and that the individual does not have the right to some privacy in public spaces. The idiotic reduction of personal freedom that comes along with this use of technology is evil, not ridiclous.

In an incredibly Orwellian move, loudspeakers are to be fitted to surveillance cameras throughout major cities, allowing CCTV operators to bark commands at people who drop litter, act in an aggressive manner or loiter.

Personally this disturbs me in a deep and profound way. Yet another step down the slippery slope toward dystopia. What do you think?

(If you haven't read 1984 by George Orwell you should, if only to understand the term "Orwellian" as used in this context. If interested try Brave New World by Aldous Huxley as well.)

  4. Actually, we have tons and tons of evidence showing we were at least 2k yards inside the Iraq border. Things like GPS positionings and local witnesses. Iran are completely in the wrong and have practically admitted it themselves by their actions.

Actually the border is completely ambiguous and has been for a long time.

There is no agreed maritime boundary between Iraq and Iran in the Persian Gulf. Until the current mad propaganda exercise of the last week, nobody would have found that in the least a controversial statement.

Let me quote, for example, from that well known far left source Stars and Stripes magazine, October 24 2006.

'Bumping into the Iranians canÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t be helped in the northern Persian Gulf, where the lines between Iraqi and Iranian territorial water are blurred, officials said.

"No maritime border has been agreed upon by the two countries," Lockwood said.'

That is Royal Australian Navy Commodore Peter Lockwood. He is the Commander of the Combined Task Force in the Northern Persian Gulf.

  5. You have still failed to give any factual evidence to support the idea that the US will attack Iran by the end of April. What a surprise.

I want to show that a war is possible and planned, not that it will happen. The pieces are in place.

  6. I only post things I think are important.

MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russian military intelligence services are reporting a flurry of activity by U.S. Armed Forces near Iran's borders, a high-ranking security source said Tuesday.

"The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran," the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched.

He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran "that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost."

He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Col.-Gen. Leonid Ivashov, vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Sciences, said last week that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future.

A new U.S. carrier battle group has been dispatched to the Gulf.

The USS John C. Stennis, with a crew of 3,200 and around 80 fixed-wing aircraft, including F/A-18 Hornet and Superhornet fighter-bombers, eight support ships and four nuclear submarines are heading for the Gulf, where a similar group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been deployed since December 2006.

The U.S. is also sending Patriot anti-missile systems to the region.

  7. Same. I also hate the way they're keeping count of the dead. -.-

Why? You hate seeing what's really going on?

Then I guess this would really blow your mind:

A team of American and Iraqi epidemiologists estimates that 655,000 more people have died in Iraq since coalition forces arrived in March 2003 than would have died if the invasion had not occurred.

  8. The US has plans like TIRANNT for every country, even our allies. You will find that all major nations around the world have contingency plans for almost every nation.

Right. The major difference being that the US is preparing to use this plan.

  9. The way you can fit Dark Side Of The Moon over the Wizard of Oz? Pretty cool.

Yeah. This is one of my favorites. A movie theatre was playing this for a while around where I live. Sikkk!

  11. US attack on Iran, codenamed TIRANNT.

Code named by US military planners as TIRANNT, "Theater Iran Near Term" has identified several thousand targets inside Iran as part of a "Shock and Awe" Blitzkrieg, which is now in its final planning stages.

According to the Kuwait-based Arab Times, an attack on Iran under TIRANNT could occur any time between late February and the end of April.

The phenomenon of death squads operating in Iraq has become generally accepted over recent months. However, in its treatment of the issue, the mainstream media has zealously followed a line of attributing extrajudicial killings to unaccountable Shia militias who have risen to prominence with the electoral victory of Ibramhim JafaariÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s Shia-led government in January. The following article examines both the way in which the information has been widely presented and whether that presentation has any actual basis in fact. Concluding that the attribution to Shia militias is unsustainable, the article considers who the intellectual authors of these crimes against humanity are and what purpose they serve in the context of the ongoing occupation of the country.

  12. Libby, 56, was the only person charged in a three-year federal investigation that reached the highest echelons of the Bush White House. The central question in the probe was whether anyone in the administration illegally disclosed classified information during the late spring and early summer of 2003, when they told several journalists that an early critic of the Iraq war was married to undercover CIA officer Valerie Plame.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 00400.html

It's not like Cheney was the one who told Libby about Valerie Plame....Oh wait, that did happen. It's not like Cheney was expected to show up in court and then didn't because good old Scooter wanted to cover for Cheney. Oh wait, that happened too. And isn't this all just icing on the giant bs filled Iraq cake? Instead of a headline saying "Bush and Cheney Lied!" we get "Libby Found Guilty". It's all a distraction. People talk about "Prewar intelligence" but what they really mean is "Prewar stupidity."

  13. Problem: US Dollar is slowly collapsing.

Solution: Move to Britain. It's the perfect country for gamers because it always rains, people have cool accents, and it's currency isn't slowly going down the drain.

    Drawbacks: None

Sounds good. They even have somewhat reasonable marijuana laws over there.

when oil supply peaks, people will be pouring BILLIONS upon BILLIONS into alternate energy, and it will be a short period of time before alternate fuel cars come out from that point. humans have a way of springing back from losses, and americans with 100m+ cars has plenty to lose. and plenty deep pockets for research. oil will be of negligable importance long before we run out.

By the time people realize that everything is going down the toilet, the BILLIONS won't be worth the paper they're printed on.

  14. http://www.breitbart.com/news/2007/02/27/D8NIA9980.html

It's the beginning of the end for the US dollar. Actually, it's the end of the end. It's days have officially been numbered since August 15, 1971. The world oil supply can not continue to meet the demands of a fully developed China and US. The illegal and unjustified war on terror is simply an excuse to grab the oil rich lands in the Middle East before it is too late. But it already is. Instead of spending hundreds of billions on this stupid war, we should have invested in alternate fuels and agricultural wealth.

  15. Modern medicine does not exist to improve quality of life. It exists to make money. For example, my grandfather was prescribed oxycontin and I had to fight with his doctor and his rehab center to convince them it was having terrible effects on his health. They didn't care. I could literally see hundreds of people in this rehab center trying to get better, but unable to improve because of all the drugs they were on. Dumb them down, and take their money...sickening. Doctors really have no idea what they are doing half the time.

All of your statements are based on the false assumption that doctors are actually trying to help people. Sure if you break your arm you should go to a doctor, but medicine for depression, ADD, old age, high cholestoral...etc. it's mostly crap.

  16. then there's words like Mith. insted of mithiril, and the one that gets me everytime, and the one i will never use, is W/E in sted of Whatever. It drives me insane that people do that! it dosn't make it eiser to read, and makes your writting look sloppy and ulgly. Imagin using Abriviations like W/E on a english writting paper and handing it in to your teacher. She/He wouldent know what your talking about!

I'm not sure if you're being ironic on purpose. If you aren't, this may prove an entertaining read. Also, 'LOL' has never meant anything. It's just something people type when they have nothing to say. Which if you haven't realized is most of the time.

  17. but i'm sure we all connected black with the devil at one point?

Darkness and evil have always gone hand in hand. The fear of the unknown. But there are people who dress in a style that could be described as "Goth" who are christians. Many are athiests. Many are wiccans. I'm sure quite a few consider themselves some form of "Satanists". It's just clothing, which in this case has nothing to do with religion.

On the other hand...What is satanism? Is it some cult, or is it simply self-indulgence? According to the Christian bible, we are all pretty much devoted satanists. We don't follow the rules laid down in the bible on what to eat, how to pray, and how to remove material possesions from our lives. I assume everyone posting here is on a computer which costs hundreds of dollars.

  18. Woah, bit harsh don't you think?

Meh, well at least he's answering the question. Gross generalizations such as

"If you are a goth I would like you to tell me why you worship the devil. "

make people angry and sinful, and bring them closer to the devil.

It is, in fact, the Christian right which has done more to drive people toward "Devil worship" than any other organization. By labeling almost anything that goes against societal norms as demonic, evil, sinful, etc. they isolate young people and divide the world into "Good and evil". Though many denominations of Christianity are accepting and aren't guilty of this, the majority actually contribute to the "Legions of the damned."

  19. Go kill yourself.

Huhu. That's a bit blunt, but to be honest, Fat Hobbit has proved many times over that there is in fact no reason for him to be alive.

All of his points are fallacious attempts at proving his own pointlessness. And, in fact, if he wins the argument (which, I suppose he has) he gets what? Confirmation of the fecetious ideals upon which he has based his attention-getting posts.

So untill he acquires a spell checker or some self-respect or something, we should probably just ignore fat_hobbit, for his own good.

    Rubbish.

What? You're flat out wrong here, friend.

    http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature ... index.html

The first was a bipartisan joint inquiry conducted by the House and Senate examining intelligence and law-enforcement failures that led up to the Sept. 11 attack. Its relatively narrow scope came about after Bush and Vice President [bleep] Cheney personally phoned then-Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., in late January 2002, pressuring him to limit the congressional investigation surrounding Sept. 11.

    ...

Family advocates complain it was created virtually in spite of the White House; they point to the extraordinary game of hardball the administration practiced right on the eve of last year's midterm elections when it derailed a bipartisan congressional deal to form the commission, citing concerns with its potential scope and subpoena power.

Consider this excerpt from the Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities before and after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001:

"The last routine radio contact with the plane was at 8:50 a.m. A few minutes later the plane made an unauthorized turn. At 9:39 a.m., flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon's soutwest side."

Obviously Bush wasn't quick enough in blocking congress. This quote clearly shows that the time between when the FAA knew the plane was hijacked and when it hit the pentagon was long enough for the plane to be intercepted by military aircraft, (if procedure had been followed).

Bush tried to block the congressional inquiry, and only allowed a real investigation if it did not "Assign blame". Turns out the executive director of the 9/11 Commission, was Philip Zelikow, a former member of Bush's National Security Council. So the supposed "Independent" and "Bipartisan" investigation which took place after the pitiful congressional inquiry was neither independent nor bipartisian. Nor, those who read it will realize, was it complete.

NIST ran a full investigation of the entire complex including WTC 7 from the time the planes hit to the time they began to collapse. There's no point going beyond when they began to collapse because it becomes inevitable that they are going to collapse because of gravity and kinetic energy and weight.

Let's talk about the common sense issues there are with 9/11, which NIST did not investigate. Have you compared the clip of the 9/11 commission report I posted with General Myers statement? Have you ever wondered if maybe, just maybe, the Pentagon has some sort of radar system? Or some sort of protection against air attacks?
