  1. Yeah, sorry that was kinda a typo...I said later on that i'll be playing a bit of rs but mostly school work...school kinda requires that your laptop can do high gaming, for editing and such.

Sorry, I missed that little blurb. :x

The only reason you would need anything that would run high end games for school would be for doing CAD work. Even then, high end laptops don't come close to the dual chip setups real shops will be using for large CAD rendering.

If you're doing lots of work in Photoshop, a good processor and a decent amount of RAM will do just fine. If it's video editing, lots of RAM and lots of disc space. If you aren't doing either of those, you don't need a high end laptop for school work.

Any new laptop on todays market will play RS and do word processing like it's nothing. (Yes, even the $600 laptops) You can also buy yourself a usb keypad for a seperate number pad if you absolutely have to have one.

  2. Like use dreamweaver and have a mess around in the design mode, then take a look at the source code. Try and figure out which piece source code releates to which piece of the page.

Dreamweaver creates a steaming pile of unmaintainable code when you start using it for things you actually need to use and keep updated. I learned this the hard way.

It's all fine and dandy playing around in the design pane, slapping pages together, but once you start learning HTML and how to create maintainable pages (stuff you can actually understand and edit later), it becomes an annoyance. The way it does it's CSS is a bit annoying too.

Playing around with a WYSIWYG editor is good for someone that has zero html and css knowlege, but once you start understanding things, you're better off doing it by hand with a good book or tutorial leading the way.

  3. 40 running processes on a brand new computer actually isn't bad at all. Most Dell and HP boxes come loaded with so much crap that you easily pass 50+ before you start removing things.

The list in the screenshot looks normal, along with the HJT log.

Be happy you only have 40 processes running with a brand new computer.

  4. i had a bad OEM version come with my pc (the cd was bad) and the install would fail half way through the formating process. so i used my own cd for half the install and then switched to my dads cd for the rest and my original key worked b/c the of the cd i started the installation with.

It doesn't matter what cd you use. The OS version (XP Home, XP Pro, ect) on the cd just has to match the version your key is linked to. So, if you own an XP Home cd key, you can use any XP home cd to do your install. You just have to use your key when it asks for it.

As for the missing key, call Microsoft, explain the situation and see what they'll do for you before you go writing it off or buying a new copy. They might just give you a new key for free.

  5. They should be able to block troublesome people from posting (moderators cannot be blocked)

This will lead to people blocking people that don't agree with their opinion and will only lead to more flame wars between users.

, the abliltiy to edit posts within their thread (It would say that it was edited by you)

Even if it's tagged as editted by the owner, it will lead to the same as blocking. People will get pissed off when a thread owner edits something (a word here or there), making the post look legit.

, and the ability to lock your own thread, and the ability to hide posts within your thread.

Locking your own thread would be usefull, but hiding posts, no. This leads to more flame wars over the thread owners opinion because he isn't allowing free debate. You don't like an opinion, you hide a post, the poster gets mad and we have another flame war.

Leave the modding to the people that know what they're doing...

  6. Current "anywhere" wireless is bought and run through the current cell phone networks here in the states (Sprint, Verizon, ect). It may be different elsewhere. It can cost about $50 a month on the low end for broadband access.

Not worth it for rs 2 hours a day.

3G Broadband?! holy crap, that rocks lol

our new 3G broadband service delivers speeds of up to 1.4Mbps when youÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re out of the office

My land line runs at 4 times that speed. Again, not worth it for 2 hours a day.

  7. 450mhz is a dinosaur. For $200, you're almost half way to a much faster Dell laptop.

Save your money and buy something from today's market. It will serve you much better than a 450mhz laptop.

  8. And could someone quickly tell me what dual and quad SLI and CAS2/CAS3 means?

Quad SLI means you have 4 video cards running at once working together to do the graphics work. Same with SLI but only with 2 cards.

CAS2/3 means the speed on the memory, the lower the better.

    Wrong.

Quad SLI can be defined as four cores (GPU) (Two 7950GX2).. Doesn't have to be four video card.

He was still correct. You just twisted it to fit the latest and greatest hardware.

  9. Intel Pentium 4 Socket 478 2.8 Ghz Prescott Core

    Nvidia GeForce FX 5200

768 MB DDR RAM (No Name RAM)

19" CRT and 15" LCD Running in nView

    2x40 GB HDDS.

Processor: Still decent for use today even tho most new stuff blows it away.

Graphics: Definately need something new if you plan on playing any new games. Nvidia 6 series cards are still available in AGP for decent prices if you look around. A few 7 series cards come in AGP but aren't really worth the price when you're buying AGP (which is being slowly phased out).

RAM: Decent amount, upgrading to a name brand and 1gb would be a good idea. You can find name brand 1gb sets (1 stick or 2 512 sticks) for $100 and under now.

The monitors don't need any comments.

IDE hard drives are still very plentifull, and prices on drives overall are falling, so you may want to look into buying another if you're filling up your 2 40gb drives.

  10. I remember reading somewhere that phpBB3 will include sub-forums like vBulliten and other boards. I can't find where I read that though. :? That would make adding sub-categories like this *much* easier since they won't add to the length of the front page, and still fall under the current gallery mods.

Isn't really relavent at the moment though, since phpBB3 is only in beta 1. :wall:

  11. It seems interesting, but some of us don't have two accounts worthy of putting in our handy dandy profile. :-#

Just a suggestion to those who want it; why not put a little link of your own in your profile such as: Here's my other account *link*

The way to do that would be by replacing the *'s with [.

    *url=http://hiscore-web.runescape.com/lang/en/aff/runescape/hiscorepersonal.ws?user1=RUNESCAPENAMEHERE]Yourtext,or runescapename*/url]

Say my username is Legend_Gaara (which it is^^)

    The link would be Legend_Gaara

HEY!! That was My code I found!! :shame:

Took me a while to figure out where and what to write for it to work so please dont steal my credit

It isn't your code either way. :? Jagex wrote it, it's publicly available, it's already used by several IRC bots, the Tip.It calcs and countless other scripts and websites.

Even if you had never found out how, sevearl hundred (if not thousands) of other people already knew how over the past few years.

I'm gonna go claim the rank url as my own now...

  12. Cool, let's compare next-gen Intel and current-gen AMD some more! =D>

That's what makes it so much fun!

The Intel Hype MachineÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâî has been working over time on these babies to make up for the last few years of AMD lashings.

In the gaming benchmarks the FX62 stands up to Core 2 duo but in the media programs it comes up far behind Core 2 duo.

Most of todays games are more graphics intensive than anything so you wouldn't see any major difference in CPU usage. The graphics card is what counts.

  13. After I get out of any game that uses a lot of resources (Half-Life 2, Battle Feild 2, Quake 4) it will make my desktop lag an insane ammount. My CPU is normal, as if I were idleing, windows blinds isn't hogging and RAM either... it's just lagging, and it will hang there untill I either manually stop the process or restart.

I like windows blinds, I don't like the fact that it still has some bugs.

I"m running window blinds and have never had that happen before. I've had Steam go on it's little panic and have to reboot, but never a lock up like that after dumping out of Half Life 2.

Running Window Blinds 4.51 (.5 something atleast). Check if you're running an earlier version and see. I've also got an Athlon64 3000+ and a gig of ram, so that migh thave something to do with it. :?

Overall it's very transparent once you get it installed and skinned the way you like it. I havn't touched my settings for Window Blinds in months.

  14. Exactly. Postcount reflects how long you have been here. You guys keep saying how hard the mods here work. Then you say there is loads of spam on the board. They both seem to contradict eachother.

Is it really that hard to understand? The mods here work hard because of the amount of spam and junk that gets posted. Lots of crap results in lots of work removing it, even if you don't notice.

Can I ask you then what is the critical element of this forum?

The server, the software, the database, the users that actually have a clue, and the staff. NOT an arbitrary click counter you put so much faith in.

  15. "In my opinion" means nothing compared to the thousands of others on this board.

Sorry? What is this entire post you've made, I believe it is in your own opinion. Dunno what you mean by that statement you're saying i'm not allowed to express my own opinion because I think differently to you? This poll was made for a reason

Most of my post wasn't opinion.

Facts (this isn't my opinion for those that don't understand)

    • [*:513lxw5x]If the admins wanted this to be a dictatorship, it would be.

[*:513lxw5x]Spam is a waste of bandwidth, server resources and mod time.

[*:513lxw5x]Post count is nothing but an arbitrary click counter

    I'm sorry you misunderstood that.

The mods around here work their wagons off to keep the boards clean, THAT'S why you don't see it. Have all the mods and admins take a day off and not clean posts, then lets see what you think about the spam problem.

The mod position is voluntary buddy, you're not forced to become one. I believe you can quit at anytime.

Yes it's voluntary, what does that have to do with anything?

If wasting database space, server power, and bandwidth is "fun", then the entire internet is nothing but a giant sandbox. Nobody is holding a gun to your head making you involve yourself in these "in depth converstions about politics". If you want to waste server resources and someones HARD EARNED MONEY, go buy your own dedicated box and spam away.

You seem to overestimate the amount of spam here. You also didn't address my point on how removing the postcount would increase the amount of spam. Human beings need something to aim for. If you really want tipit to become something like the rs boards then removing postcounts would be a good way to start.

I didn't overestimate anything. You would have an extremely had time if you tryed to count the number of times this board has been spammed with worthless crap that the mods have to clean. Just because you didn't see it in your 2 days here doesn't mean it didn't exist.

Humans may need something to shoot for, but if your goal is a giant pixel'ed number online, you need help. Post count is at the very bottom of my list of acheivments, and I can guarantee it's at the bottom of many others.

Post count also has nothing to do with the RSO boards. Tip.it would be in the same position if it had thousands of concurrent users online at any given time. Jagex actually gave us post counts with the last forum update, and little changed. Spam didn't magically go down when it was released like you suggest. It should go down with post counts be displayed, since that's all that's holding spam back, shouldn't it?

Playing the game longer does means something. It means you've been around longer, and are most likely more knolegable. If post count gauges how much you know, your 20 posts makes you one of the many village idiots and makes the top posters gods. This isn't the case now is it?

Yes playing longer makes you more knowledgable I never said otherwise. Having 7k posts doesn't make you any more knowledgable than a person with 20 post count but it makes you more trustable. You've been on this site longer than them and you have posted more than them. Posted! It's a forum, you're meant to post, you take away a postcount and the forum becomes completely redudant. It's like stealing the wheels from a bike and still expecting somebody to have as much fun with it as before.

So, trust has been reducted to the number of times you click a button. Great.

So, what happens when someone with that high post count and "trusted" reputatoin turns around and stabs you in the back? It's happened many times before. People posing as girls for "social experiments", mods getting banned for RWT. The list could go on with a little digging.

Taking away the post count doesn't stop you from posting. It's still a forum. You can still talk to other people.

It's nothing like stealing the wheels from a bike. You take the wheels, and it can no longer do it's job. Removing post counts from a forum is like taking all the sparkly junk off said bike, leaving the wheels. The boards still function with or without those "sparkly bits", unlike your wheel analogy. Taking the wheels off the forum would be like shutting the database off. Not happening here.

Again, post count is nothing but a count of how many times you clicked the submit button. I could spend 2 minutes a day posting total junk, and still have it count because it's not deleted.

Then you'd be banned pretty quickly. Stop having this thoughts that removing postcounts would decrease spam. It wouldn't work and the forum would go down the drain...

Taking my "2 minutes" comment literally doesn't help much. It was a quick example.

How would removing an arbitrary click counter send the boards down the drain? The same people would still be posting, if they were as trustable as their post count should make them according to you. The world moves on, and we get more server resources for legitamate posts and users instead of wasting it on disk writes for a stupid number.

  16. You guys seem to want to run a dictatorship here, I thought this forum was for fun. Oh let's all clamp down on spam,in my opinion the mods seem to handle spam fine. Give them 3 warnings then ban them, sheesh that would help clamp down on spam. You don't need to remove postcounts to stop spam, what's working now is fine.

If they wanted to run a dictatorship, this poll wouldn't exist, we wouldn't have a choice in it and the count would have just disappeared one day. You should know the meaning of words before you use them.

"In my opinion" means nothing compared to the thousands of others on this board.

The mods around here work their [wagon] off to keep the boards clean, THAT'S why you don't see it. Have all the mods and admins take a day off and not clean posts, then lets see what you think about the spam problem.

What some of you class as spam other's class as an amusing conversation. Not all of us joined these forums to have in depth converstions about politics. You forget this is a forum for a game, a game which we all play for fun shouldn't the forum be the same? We're here to have fun aren't we?

If wasting database space, server power, and bandwidth is "fun", then the entire internet is nothing but a giant sandbox. Nobody is holding a gun to your head making you involve yourself in these "in depth converstions about politics". If you want to waste server resources and someones HARD EARNED MONEY, go buy your own dedicated box and spam away.

Also somebody keeps bringing up the point about how your post count doesn't make you reliable? I think it does, just because you have been playing the game longer doesn't mean you should be automatically trusted. If you want to be trusted on these forums you have to be active on these forums and generally activity means posting.

Playing the game longer does means something. It means you've been around longer, and are most likely more knolegable. If post count gauges how much you know, your 20 posts makes you one of the many village idiots and makes the top posters gods. This isn't the case now is it?

The more you post the more active you are. You take away postcounts and you take a way all the trust this community has.

Again, post count is nothing but a count of how many times you clicked the submit button. I could spend 2 minutes a day posting total junk, and still have it count because it's not deleted. You are a prime example, joined 2 days ago, and already have 20 posts. It means nothing.

  17. I've never found a concrete reason for that happening. Just had someone else with this problem the other day.

Best I can say is check your firewall settings and make sure it's letting mIRC connect like it wants to.

You could also check this thread on the mIRC forum for some simple things to try fixing it.

  18. When someone posts a download link (to a movie or maybe a POH designer or something of the sort), if you notice someone has a very low post count then that's a first clue that the person is untrustworthy. Now, your argument in this states that post count does not show how trustworthy someone is, but consider this: Who is more likely to post a keylogger?

It's not impossible that some crazy joker who's made a thousand posts could suddenly go rogue and post something malicious. Better solutions:

    • [*:phn2ksaf]Wait two minutes for some hapless guinea pig to go running in and try it himself

      - OR -

[*:phn2ksaf]Spend the time to actually secure your computer, so you can't catch a keylogger just by trying to play a movie. Honestly, it doesn't take that much effort and it's certainly worth it.

I was going to reply to that, but couldn't find the quote (11:30pm, I'm tired).

High post count has zero to do with how trustworthy and reliable someone is. A certain ex-mod and super-merchant comes to mind.

I personally have a low post count and an early join date (for this incarnation of TIF). It again has zero to do with how I contribute here. I don't post because I hate most of the junk that's posted. Much of it has no use, but that's my opinion, and it usually ticks people off when I say it. I instead spend my time on IRC and add to the community from there (room issues aside. *prods admins*).

You can pick and prod at post count all you want, it still doesn't change the fact it's an arbitrary number counting how many times you clicked the submit button. Quality post, spam or not.

Albosky brought up the fact that post counts and thread views are the biggest factor when it comes to DB updates and so on.

feteching the row when reading posts of course wouldnt add any noticeable difference, but when a post is made , update queries are sent to 4 different tables, so posting would show an small improvement overall , especially during peak hours, when topic views were removed temporarily , table writes(updates) decreased by almost 50%

That alone should be reason enough to ditch both features on a forum this size, especially with all the performance issues it had a few months ago.
