Yeah, I posted it a year ago, and I copied everything almost exactly from a year ago since only one thing's changed - they've found an experimental treatment to this very common and very deadly disease. Even last year I didn't understand my disease as well as I do today, but I'll try to explain what happens. You know how when you excercise (sp?), your muscles feel tired? That's because acids build up on your muscles that you're using and begin to eat away at them. However, you counter-act these acids, your body produces a chemical called Dystrophyn to use up the acid once you relax. However, people that suffer from MD do not produce this counter-actant and the acids eat away at the muscles and turn them into fat until there's nothing left, eventually spreading to the heart causing your cardiac muscles to turn to fat until you either die of heart attack or suphocation from your lung muscles collapsing. The experimental treatment injects the chromosome that produces the chemical dystrophyn into a type of the flu virus. The flu virus is then put into the blood stream via one of the major veins in your body. The flu virus attaches to a cell, injects it's DNA (which would be the one single chromosome) into the cell. The cell later multiplies, spreading copies of this chromosome throughout the body. Within a few months the body will be almost cured of the disease entirely. The problem, however, is the government wouldn't allow this to happen after the last treatment. The last experimental treatment was injecting artificial dystrophyn into the body. Scientists tested this treatment on the rats, and after several dosages of the chemical, the 6/10 of the rats were treated from the disease (but not cured). Thinking that the other 4 rats might just have a genetic problem with them, they showed their research to the government and the government allowed the MDA to test on humans. This caused liver cancer in all 10 of the patients it was tested on, and none of them survived. After this, the government haulted funding for the program, so the MDA had to rely almost entirely on donations from people like y'all. After researches showed that this treatment dealing with chromosomes and gene splicing cured all 10 rats, the government is now letting the MDA get a third chance (the first treatment didn't do squat, I don't remember what they did but I think it was something like removing "bad" cells) at testing on humans. This testing period will begin in 2006. *NOTE* If anyone could post this message on the RS community topic that I also posted on there, that would be great because there's a kid on there trying to tell people that the hurricane relief fund is more worthy of receiving money than this
