  1. Pro-life is anti abortion.

    Pro-choice is for it.

I really hate saying pro-choice is for it, it's not that I think abortion is the end all solution, I just think the option should be there.

I'll take the position of being "anti-abortion" if people on the other side acknowledge that their position is "pro-abortion".

If you were really "pro-choice", you'd do everything in your power to make it just as easy to carry to term and give birth as it is to procure an abortion. Funny we never see this from "pro-choice" organizations.

But being pro-life means much more than the abortion debate. Pro-life is against euthanasia, Pro-life is against the death penalty. Pro-life is from conception to natural death. I'm pro-life, I have all these beliefs.

Firstly, people who are pro-choice often spend more time and money educating people about sex and preventing unplanned pregnancies than people who are pro-life ever do. I know this doesn't relate specifically to helping carry babies to term, but it somewhat clarifies that they aren't just really into abortions.

Secondly, while it is admirable that you take this pro-life stance universally, a majority (this is an educated guess) of people who proclaim to be "pro-life" tend to be in favor of things like the death penalty, tend to be more accepting of war, etc. (I have no idea about euthanasia.) I often get the feeling from a lot of pro-lifers that they really care about you when you're in the womb, but after that they stop caring (until you become eligible for the military, then they care again!)

  2. In my English class we have to read To Kill a Mockingbird. I already read it in 7th grade, but I don't remember much from it. Pretty neutral on the book, I guess.

I also just purchased Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert.

Crazy, we have to read To Kill a Mockingbird in my class as well... But I haven't read it before. It's a pretty easy read though.

  3. 1995. Something more recent please. And yes, EVERY religion has bizarre bombers, and weird extremists (remember the old topic about the Christian woman who didn't feed her family, because she thought God would provide?) But if there could be a bar graph comparing Islam to other religions, it would excede the others by far.

As you said, "no pic no proof".

I think THAT is a far worse statement (asserting that Islam is a "worse" religion in terms of violence) than simply saying that there are some crazy Christians.

  4. I don't have a source to cite to you, but I do know that while fission reactions, if something bad happens, will react out of control (chain reactions), fusion reactions, if something bad happens, will simply cool down, thus stopping themselves. Again I cannot find a source proving this at this time, but I do remember talking about it specifically in physics class as one of the main advantages.

Secondly while fusion does produce more energy per reaction/size/whatever, it is not as if it is the same cost to fuse/fizz an equal amount (in terms of mass or in terms of size) of material.

So it's not like you can just take some Uranium that you were planning to perform fission on and say "Hey let's fuse it!" and get hundreds of times more energy. If that made sense.

  5. Fission is for atomic bombs, right? Well, we got that down pretty good. On to the next frontier of tearing [cabbage] apart for our own gain!

Fusion is involved in hydrogen bombs, which are usually 'jump-started' with atomic bombs that are using nuclear fission. In my physics class we learned about nuclear power, and fission vs. fusion. I don't remember all of it, but I didn't hear anything about "creating little suns." Supposedly the first nuclear fusion power station was scheduled to be open in 2016 (I believe in France?)

    Nuclear fusion is preferable to nuclear fission for two reasons;

    1) It doesn't create as much (not sure if it creates any?) nuclear waste, compared to fission.

    2) It can't melt down. If the reaction goes awry, as opposed to reacting out of control and melting out of its chamber (Chernobyl), it simply shuts itself down (fizzles out basically).

Again though, I don't think it's very related to 'mini-suns'. Articles about science tend to oversimplify the actual work that's going on, or put it into terms a person can understand (often losing what's really happening.)

After reading the article, I've come to understand they're basically saying it will use hydrogen fusion power, which the sun does use, therefore they compare it to the Sun. I'm not against them doing this to help people understand what's going on (although most people don't understand what's going on in the Sun anyway), but their statement is basically like saying:

"Trees grow by using photosynthesis. We have created a laser that causes particles to undergo photosynthesis. Therefore, we have created little trees!"

  6. I do remember having one lucid dream once, I think. I realized I was dreaming, flew around outside my house, thought "WOW I'm flying!" then was so astonished I woke up.

But I also think I woke up in the night once and couldn't move... It was so scary. I freaked out until suddenly I could move. Then I went back to sleep.

Another thing I heard (this might be of import to some of you) is that sometimes when you wake up form a dream, and think "damn that was a good dream, oh well back to sleep", you are still actually dreaming, and it's a 'false wake-up' (not the right term, meh). The way to test if you're really awake is keep something with writing on it next to your bed. I'm not sure if you are either supposed to have read it, or supposed to have NOT read it, but it's one of those (very non-helpful, I know). If you are in a dream, either the writing will look like gobblede[grime], or it will change if you look at it, look away, then look at it again.

So if the writing is different the second time or if it's plain nonsense, then you probably are still dreaming. But if you test out flying try hovering in the air before jumping out your window ;)

Some people mentioned flipping a light switch or looking in a mirror; those probably work just as well as my idea.

  7. You notice how all the people supporting abortion have already been born?

Not commenting on your actual points, but this just struck my as hilariously funny.

  8. Well, from personal experience, blacks I meet seem to be treated better by the system, then whites. Most are also more lazy.

However, I have a very strong defense against anyone calling me a racist. 2 of my brothers and 1 of my sisters have been adopted from Ethiopia, as well as I have one brother adopted from Bulgaria. Thus, I don't have a "bias", all that i feel is based off experience.

And if someone plays the race card, I'd tell them to go to hell. They are the ones spreading racism far more then others.

I joke around against and for all races. I tell black jokes, but also white jokes. People are too damn sensitive. In America, you have the right to freedom of speech, not the freedom to not be offended.

And to the idiot above me, I say sir, learn you history. I don't think that the Jews killed 6 million people, and I also don't think that Israel is the country threating to blow another country into the sea.

Terrorizing the Arabs...You go to public school, correct?

Please keep quiet, do not judge him and say based on his opinion he must have received a public education. You have been poisoned by American media bias. I condemn the PLO as a terrorist group and they constantly unjustly bombard Israel with missiles which puts them in fault. However, I also personally know many innocent Palestinians, some Christian, some Muslim, who were just citizens are were forcibly removed from their houses by israeli soldiers, so please do not speak because the media has told you something and you have no person experience. Israel also forcibly invaded Lebanon, an ally at the time, who was trying to put down Hezbollah, an enemy of Israel, but instead they decided to just bust right in. They wrongly hold Golan Heights from Syria and they held the Sinai Peninsula. I will not even touch the matter of them occupying land they should not be in, and the European Jews treat the Mizrahi Jews poorly, and if any Jew should be in the Holy Lands it should be the Mizrahi because they've actually been living there.

And if you would like to challenge me as someone who was educated in a public system, my family has been attending only private institutions as far as we can prove with record (which is my great great grandfather who attended an academy funded by the sultan of the ottoman empire) and I have one-on-one tutors for Arabic, writing composition, drawing, violin, guitar and fencing (and formerly Italian & Aramaic which I've sufficiently learned). I have been profusely educated and I hold the position you scoff at. Besides, I have no doubt there are probably people who have attended public schooling all their lives and they're more intelligent then me because of their great desire to learn.

Even a textbook can lie to suit the victor and listening to only what the media feeds you creates racism and bigotry that you aren't even aware of.

I don't even see the point you're trying to make in your post... All i see is gross amounts of pretentiousness. Anyway, your assumption that public schools are inherently worse than private ones* is far worse than Stonewall's guess that the person he's addressing went to public school.

*by talking about someone smarter than you who might have gone to public school as if they were some sort of infinitely rare quantity.

  9. So simple solution, don't act like a terrorist.

So simple solution, don't act like a Muslim.

(Note: this was intended to be humerous, and was NOT insinuating that all Muslims are terrorists. It was [humerously] insinuating that Americans and our governmnet have an unjustifiable bias against/fear of Muslims.)

  10. Kids - are the most basic, most natural reason for sex. Since gays can't produce kids through sex, then they've made the act illegitimate. They've stripped it of its natural purpose and are using it only for pleasure (something which unfortunately many others do as well).

    Hell no, you a virgin?

Nope. Please, try to tell me reproduction isn't the natural purpose of sex.

So you never use condoms, I assume?

  11. Yeah apparently in the east there is a huge blizzard there, I know my family in Virginia is getting a ton of snow right now.

In Northern VA right now we had 19 inches outside my house. And it's supposed to snow for another 12 hours.

Apparently this is the 2nd/3rd most snow we've ever had (If you assume snowfall here = snowfall in DC, and based on my measurements, and based on this chart:http://www.lauren.org/storm/snow_record03.jpg)

Northern VA gets loads of snow, us folks in southern VA get a few flurries that don't stick to the ground <.<

    *wants snow*

    Hardly.

In the years I've lived in Northern VA (6 years) we've never got more than like 3 inches at once. Last winter we didn't get a single snowfall of more than like 1 inch I think.

However, I am prejudiced because I used to live in Boston.

  13. But seriously, postcount is extremly pointless. It doesn't give you anything at all, basically the more respected you are in the community is a hundered times more important and....

    +1

Says the person with 1.7k post count (check his profile) within nearly 4 months. <_<

Posting a lot doesn't necessarily mean you care about your post count.

Maybe you just have a lot to say.

  14. What are your views on suicide? Are you against it?

I am 100% pro suicide. I think it would further the human race if everybody committed suicide!

(this isn't in seriousness, just poking fun at how the question was worded.)

It's she, thank you, and I was actually hoping that your average OTer wouldn't need me to walk them through my rather blatant logic. :s

Please don't act like you're superior to us because you made a crappy argument that wasn't well-explained, then expected us to waste time thinking about it when from the get-go it was obvious that it was going to just cause flames and annoyance.

  15. Haha I pressed the Cyber button, and Stranger 2 said "This is the mother of a 14 year old child. If you reply, I will trace this to the police."

    and Stranger 1 said "Hi".

Stranger 2 said "You are being traced." then ended the chat.

  17. In this sense, the death penalty seems like a cop out - these people aren't forced to sit in a cell and face the fact that they've done something wrong. Theyre effectively given a get out of jail free card.

The problem with this is that not everybody shares this view - many people would rather spend life in prison then be killed.

  18. Old Mr. Terminus was lying on his deathbed while his wife was about to give birth. Father William was at his bedside when Mr. Terminus dictated his will. "I leave 2/3 of my estate to my child should it be a boy, and 1/3 to my wife. If the child is a girl, I want 2/3 to go to my wife and 1/3 to my daughter." Mr. Terminus passed on and left Father William a rather peculiar problem, since Mrs. Terminus gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.

How should the estate be divided in order to comply as closely as possible with Mr. Terminus' wishes?

1/3 to his son, 1/6 to his daughter, and 1/2 to his wife?

My answer was kind of just math-y though, so I don't think I'm right.
