How were the Armoured Zombies drops nerfed?

I don't have a salve amulet, but I could look into getting one. What would be good if I don't get the amulet?

Which is the better of the two? Or is it just preference?

I just started playing RS again, not having played since Pest Control was in its infancy. I've read that "the powers that be" have decreased the XP given from Pest Control, so my question is. Is there anything that gives XP like the old Pest Control did? If not, what is a good way to train combat?
