Laptop = slow and fudged - solved

Featured Replies

OK then, recently my laptop has had episodes of slowness, these range from tiny lag to a whole system freeze-up.

So I look at task manager - processes and I see a "svchost[Caution: Executable File]" taking up 99% of my CPU constantly leaving no room for anything - during this time if I try to load any programs they just don't appear, ever.

If I ever "end process" this svchost[Caution: Executable File] my sound device is knocked off meaning I need to reinstall the drivers before it works again (even if I dont do this the svchost[Caution: Executable File] still occurs). Anything currently playing works though - I.e. if I have WMP open, then close svc.host, music will still play until I close and restart WMP.

I have updated my sound and BIOS drivers but the problems still occurs.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as my A levels are weeks away and I need this laptop for revision (although I have notes backup on USB if necessary)

Install antivirus i would suggest Avast - http://www.avast.com

Also in stall Ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy which can be found using Google.

once these are installed run a virus scan with each of these seperately in safe mode which can be accessed by pressing F8 at the boot menu (the black screen when your computer is starting up)

Doing these scans will remove any viruses you may have which could be causing your system lag.

You need to do exactly what the guy above me said. That's the obvious first thing to do.

I found out what this was, the svchost. was responsible for automatic updates - disabling this and restarting killed the problem but now means I have to check for updates manually.

better than nothing though

I have also found this to be a problem on lots of computers.Sometimes this can be resolved and other times can't, or should I say I haven't been able to resolve them.

Have a look at this link post no.5
