Ok here's the idea... the blue ship guy is from this planet... he's getting attacked by another alien army... (not shown) and hes about to get into a cat fight over by the explosion on the planet surface...

Basically I just need concept help... move this here, move that there, use this color instead... Any help?

The blueship is not the final ship unless I get lazy and decide not to model a good one... haha....

can't seem to get any views... i have an idea....

Top left corner keep it really dark, adds static suspense and mystery. Add hints of light in the darkness to portray the oncoming assault.

As you move towards the explosion you have there add firey tones and build that up throughout the whole piece to add an atmosphere of chaos and dystopia. Colors at the explosion should be vibrant, and then cast these tones onto the ships.

So scrap the blues, blue = a cool color. You want warmth and fire so use red and yellow. Also darken the right corner as well, but not as much the left. I like the perspective you got going, so keep that and accentuate the three areas that you've used and that is, the ship, the city beneath and the explosion. And the smoke coming off the ship should be gray/blackish, white seems too pure. I probably missed something but thats what I got in mind. Extract the ideas and details that you want :)

Place a darkening shade in the front parts of the ships: add a previously flown entering atmostphere look.

Some battle burns, like black scratches and shotmarks.

A faint outline of the pilot.

Some buildings on fire/ruined.

Possible a downed ship.

Blue ship returning fire as if it were ina dogfight with many ships.

Very good mind you, but these just some suggestions =)

Nice pixel ploy :)

I would have to see it reduced size, obviously at this size it looks a bit different. The smoke on the lower left looks odd..but since it is a concept I assume that big blob part will be fixed. The metalic shading is nice and smooth, but the left side is off, with the highlights coming from more the front.

. I like the idea of throwing color on the ships that froth had. OF course he always had gone for more monochromatic works :)

It currently appears that he is crashing, not about to get in a fight..is that the desired effect?

If you have that much fire raining down, and explosions, perhaps some earlier craters on the ground? scoring marks?

The reason the ship is blue is because he is supposed to represent the good army... the good guys. I felt that a blue ship would best represent this. What I'm considering doing instead is removing the blue and the sparkles, and make it have a mirror finish instead. This would be alot like the Queen's ship in Star Wars, if you follow.. I was also somewhat liking the complementary color scheme... I dunno though, I'll play with it. :)

What I'll definitely do is fix the lighting on the ship, and change the ambient colors to the warm scheme...

The craters, and the buildings on fire will all be done, I just didn't draw it in the concept. The smoke blob will also be fixed, this is just a nasty sketch.

He is going for the fight, it's like he just hit his afterburner or something...

For some reason the scene conveyed to me is him crashing after some damage.....and the planet under siege. Not sure how that can be overcome, but maybe it is just me anyway.

Complimentary..yeah that can certainly help set thing off.....Why not try having the atmosphere engulf the other ship but this one be slightly free of it still and with a more natural coloration? As for a high sheen steel look...naw that would be nasty in my opinion...but who knows.

(shameless commercial/plea following, since you commented earlier.... if you have time check out my reworked/sharpened/with hair and belly button version of my recent work. I am trying to figure out how to overcome the crazy line syndrome. Certainly though my brushes were too soft.)

One of the things that's really kind of bugging me is the lack of ships. For some reason I think a planetary defense force would consist of far more than 2 ships..

I know there's not a ton of room, but you could still stick 2 or 3 more ships in somewhere..

Also, I'm with Tttia here. It looks like the main ship is about to crash, not rush into battle, I think it's the combination of the smoke, and the angle of both him and the world.

Perhaps doing a cloud of fire instead of a cloud of smoke or something?

IRKAa.jpg

ah wait, it is all clear now...er...those things on the back are obviously thrusters, but at first looked like LIGHTS. The whole implied motion of the ship is making the back look like the front. It also seems quite non-aerodynamic of the front is actually the one facing the fight.

Ie...it LOOKS like it is descending to the planet, the part we see foremost is the front and it looks like it is about to crash.

If your idea was to show it thrusting to the scene I totally missed it until the 5 th lookover.

for that matter I just noticed the missles coming from the far ship...I thought it was crashing too. Ah well....I actually think it would look better as a scene with the ships crashing and the planetary defense in great peril. There is far more implied action in a scene of peril/crashing, and the seeming crushed hopes of the planet than in some battle that just has two ships about to fight some unknown assailant. Especially given that in the current scene the assailants seem to be using similar ordinance, of similar str etc. It is far mor moving to see an unknown , mysteriously overwhelming force pummeling a society that might yet..despite it all, rally.

Well seeing as how you can't recognize the front from the back, it lets me know I really need to rework the design; which is something I had planned on doing, assuming lazyness did not find me first.

Wyrm - There will be more ships, and more designs too. This is just one ship. I'll probably have a variation of it and then a few ships of the attacking army. I just need to model them first so I can figure out a good placement that fits with their design. I'm definitely going to try to stick with a more organic style ship design because; a) its easier for me B) it helps the theme.

Although I do wish to improve, I think I should start comfortable, then move on to harder things. This is one in a series of concentration.

I'll play with the steel look, if it looks too tacky I'll be sure to get rid of it. I'm trying to learn more about HDRI, which I think would be cool to use along with a shiny reflective ship, assuming I found/created the right image for it.

I'll also probably do like you said and make it more of a thruster fire than smoke, I don't want to idea of crashing, well at least that wasn't the original concept.

Tttia- I kinda like your idea about peril and no hope... but I'll play with it. Overall I don't really care about the storyline, but instead what will make for a better piece.

I'll keep you guys posted on this stuff... have alot of free time at work right now, no real projects to do... so I've just been playing on Softimage trying to learn it better. (I still suck at 3d)
