hey i was just wondering does the black mask only help you with your assignment if you melee or does it help if you range as well?

Since it gives bonuses to attack and strength I'm guessing melee only.

Yep, melee only. Unless it's charged then the charges, if meleeranging could at a push technically help but, for all intents and purposes, melee only.
